Part 2 😢 hen is starting to soften a little more because Maddie is clearly on the verge of breaking but stubbornly insisting she’s the only one who can take care of chim. Chim is delirious and not really watching what he’s saying for once 🥺
“You sure you’re okay?” Hen asks, this time more sympathy than annoyance in her voice because Maddie’s hands are trembling and she looks like she’s about five seconds away from a breakdown, “because I know--”
“I-I can handle it,” she shakes her head stubbornly, wiping at her cheeks, “it’s fine. I’m the charge nurse.”
“I know,” Hen says patiently, “but you don’t seem okay right now.”
“I can d-do it,” Maddie huffs, and Hen sighs and relents, going back to talking to Chimney quietly and rubbing his back.
Maddie wishes that she could be the one holding him, but for one thing, she has a job to do, and for another, she wouldn’t blame Chimney if he hated her. She had been so rude, hurt his feelings, probably embarrassed the hell out of him, and then had been ignoring him all week.
If he was a little more all there mentally, he would probably be begging for another nurse.
“Why are you crying?” he asks in a quiet, scared, childlike voice, “s’okay.”
“Not crying,” she shakes her head, though she’s wiping at her eyes again because yeah, she definitely is. She’s just glad she’s able to steady her hands for just long enough to get an IV of fluids in for him without fucking it up and causing him (more) unnecessary pain.
“Look sad. Sorry.”
“Shh, you haven’t done anything wrong,” she hums, wincing at the his temperature reading, not that she had really expected to see it come down at all so quickly, but hating that it’s still so high nonetheless. He’s scaring her, he’s so sick and delirious and if it were anyone else she would be more calm but it’s NOT anyone else.
It’s Chimney, her Howie, and he must be feeling so very terrible.
“Sad,” he whimpers, tears pooling up in his own eyes now and God, she feels like even more of a jerk than she did before, which she didn’t even know was possible, “don’t cry. Pretty. Like you. Don’t want you to cry.”
“Y-You’re sweet,” she murmurs, wiping at her eyes once more and trying not to read too much into it because she’s delirious and the hope rising in her chest is yet another unprofessional thing about she’s handled his case since he arrived at the ER.
“S’true. Like you so much. Missed you lots.”
“Hey,” Hen murmurs, bringing her hand to his cheek, “maybe we wanna keep some of our feelings to ourselves until our fever comes down a little, okay?”
“No,” he whines stubbornly, shaking his head against Hen’s shoulder, “Maddie’s sad. Don’t like it.”
“I know, I know, but she’s just a little worried about you, it’s okay,” Hen says calmly, trying her very best to calm him down and to shut him up for his own good but it’s not working.
“Really like her, Hen.”
“I know, but now is not--”
“Been hiding. Why you been hiding, Maddie?” he pouts, and God, he’s so very adorable and she most definitely should not be thinking about that when he has a high fever that needs to come down as soon as possible.
“Shh, we’ll talk later, okay?” she whispers, unable to resist bringing her hand to cup his chin, “no worrying about me, alright? Need to get you feeling all better; you’re what’s important right now.”
“You’re always important to me,” he whines earnestly, and she can feel her heart thumping in her chest.
“You’re s-so very sweet,” she stammers, pulling her hand back though she really doesn’t want to, “it’s okay, I promise.”
“Hurt your feelings at the party. M’sorry. Never wanna hurt your feelings. My favorite person.”
“Okay--” Hen cuts in, again trying to hush him for his own good, but it again fails.
“Whatever I did, please come back,” he whimpers, and Maddie can’t help it, she’s starting to cry all over again, “please--”
He’s cut off by a retch, and Hen sighs, the look on her face telling Maddie that this is not the first time Chimney’s thrown up on her that afternoon.
“Word vomit followed by actual vomit,” she teases, seeming remarkably unphased, “great job, Chim.”
Chimney anxious throws up on his best buddy pal Maddie and he’s crying apologising trying to clean it up but she’s like nooo go to bed, I’ll clean it up. You can make it up to me.
“Oh my god, oh my god, I’m so sorry... so, so sorry, let me--”
“No, no,” she shakes her head, squeezing his shoulder, “it’s okay. Was my fault, you tried to warn me and I wouldn’t let go of you. Thought you just wanted to run and hide, didn’t realize you were going to be sick. I’m sorry, Chim.”
“No, I-I’m sorry, happens to m-me when I panic sometimes... I,” he sniffles, hiding his face in his hands, “s-sorry.”
“Shh,” she hushes him, rubbing his back, “I was an ER nurse for seven years, remember? It’s alright, this is nothing. Why don’t you go brush your teeth and get in bed, hm? You need rest, you look exhausted. I can clean myself up and you can make it up to me tomorrow by watching the movie I want to watch.”
“N-No, let me--”
“Chimney,” she coos, wrapping arm arm around his shoulders, “Chimney, it’s fine, honey. It’s okay. You’re okay. It happens. Go lie down and I’ll get cleaned up really quickly and then we can cuddle and sleep--”
“No, no, g-go,” he pleads, before clarifying, “love h-having you hear just so embarrassed.”
“Don’t be,” she says simply, pulling his hands away from his face so he has to look at her, “you’re my friend, it’s okay. I’m telling you that it’s okay, Chim. And I don’t want to leave okay? I want to stay and snuggle like we do all those other nights, because I especially need to be there with you when you’re having a rough time, hm?”
“O-okay,” he says quietly, and really, it doesn’t sound all that convincing, so she shouldn’t be surprised when she hears the bedroom door lock.
