Rewatching season 2 is like, Buck is being standoffish with Eddie in the first episode and by the end of it making declarations of loyalty and then the rest of the season they're glued to each other's sides and he's yapping up a storm and Eddie is gazing at him softly, like as soon as Buck determined Eddie was 'safe' he enfolded him into his life immediately and Eddie sunk into that affection and care and partnership like an exhausted man falls into bed, with gusto and relief

In 8x11, Buck tells Ravi that when they first met, he didn’t “warm up” to Eddie for “almost a whole shift”, which sort of implies they became friends within that first shift together, and is often taken to refer to the grenade in the ambulance, which is often wrongly remembered as being during their first shift together.

However, in 2x01, what actually happens is that they have that first shift, Eddie steps in to depressurise Hector the garage guy, and then - mid first shift - Buck accepts that he’s competent and tells him (begrudgingly) good job.

He then goes home, because that shift has ended, and walks in on Maddie in the shower (still hilarious).

It’s after that, during their second shift, when they pull the grenade out of Charlie’s leg and become flirty boy best friends forever.

But.

By his own admission, Buck “warmed up” to Eddie before that second shift, before the grenade, during that first shift. They didn’t become friends until their second shift and Buck proving himself to Eddie by following him into the ambulance (and Eddie praising Buck and giving him positive attention), but Buck was already on board before then, as soon as he saw that Eddie was competent at saving Hector during that first shift.

Eddie Diaz had more chemistry with Felisa Valdez in one single episode (6x07) than with all episodes with Marisol and Ana combined

I'm just saying, IF the writers wanted to show Eddie just getting along so well with a female character/love interest, they CAN.

And yet, the viewers are presented, again and again, that his other half, the family he chose, his sounding board, worthy of his son getting on a plane to soothe their soul, is always Buck.

In my 9-1-1 rewatch I got to the scene where Eddie gets shot and bruh. I can’t express enough that’s NOT how you portray two straight bro friends in that situation. There was NOTHING straight about that scene ffs

Like seriously the PRODUCTION choices are not remotely straight. Hold on I need to analyze the shit out of this…

Straight bros get shot scene:

Initial silence surrounding the gunshot, immediate cut back to chaos and screaming. Guy 1 yells out and tries to rush to help Guy 2 who has been shot, desperate to keep him alive. Dramatic audio; epic music, dramatic stings, thrumming, maybe heartbeat sound effects.

Overall: fast paced, drama, high energy, high stimulation. Emotions of panic, desperation, maybe anger.

Romantic relationship gets shot scene:

Silence surrounding the gunshot, maybe a silent desperate scream from Partner 1, EYE CONTACT, slow motion fall to the ground. Silence CONTINUES, sound does not return because the couple are the only people who exist in the world in that moment. Maybe dramatic sorrowful music.

Partner 1 falls to the ground or at Partner 2’s side, EYE CONTACT, reaching for eachother. Silence. Soft faces. Sadness, quiet horror. EYE CONTACT. Tenderness. Holding eachother. Literally never take their eyes off eachother because they are the only two people in the world who exist in that moment.

Overall: slow, quiet, mournful, longing, low energy, intimate.

NOW WHICH ONE DOES EDDIE’S SHOT SCENE MOST RESEMBLE HMMMM???

There can literally be NO WAY they made that with straight intentions 😭😭😭

SO INTERESTING to me the way that Eddie and Shannon’s first on screen conversation is phrased.

“What did you need that I didn’t give you?”

“I needed you to have my back.”

A scant 6 episodes after he and Buck promise to do EXACTLY THAT for each other and then continue to do so no questions asked for 7 years.

Am I supposed to think that word choice is a coincidence?!
