Hmm, interesting. When I started the fortiflora it was daily for a month which lessened the symptoms dramatically, then weekly for a month, and now it's monthly and she seems to have fully recovered. Truly I wouldn't mind doing this for the rest of her life because it's very easy and cheap but it was weird to me how her guts were apparently very angry.
The kibble hasn't stayed the same this whole time- they're just now finishing up a three month supply of Purina Proplan Sensitive Skin and Stomach which she was on when I brought her home and she refused to eat but now goes apeshit for it. They're slowly switching onto a bag of Canidae I got for like 2USD and then onto the year's worth of bulk Petco brand I got for Sushi last year.
The 'wet' has been anything from freshpet to raw to canned to dehydrated- she lost too much weight when I tried totally switching her to raw with the faster metabolism and it scared me so now she gets food with more filler and fiber. I didn't see the symptoms during the month I had her purely on raw and also she was not eating poop anymore but again, she started looking skinny and I didn't like that on an already absurdly small dog.
When we found the old infection she had a quick course of flagyl and a different probiotic that she hated and refused to eat. Seemed to resolve whatever the infection was but then as said the weird 'poo' started.
Her actual poop smells, well, like poop. The blood/mucous combo smelled like... well, like a butt. Not like poop per say but definitely a butt smell. Which, that's what it came out of, so fair. Finding the smeared remains of it on a potty pad made me really concerned so I'd sniff it to see if it was blood or bloody poop and it always just smelled like butt. But *she* smells sweet, she always smells like maple syrup even when she needs a bath, unless she's covered in something nasty she rolled in.
At first I thought it was because she was constipated, because she always has strained very hard, and maybe she was giving herself hemmeroids or something, but... she still does that and the actual problem symptom has stopped. It's not anal glands and doesn't smell like that, she seems to be fine expressing those and only scoots when she's had a significantly yucky poop or on novel textures. So I added the higher fiber, higher water content wet food to see if that would maybe help even though she does drink.
