A moment in time: Nation's front pages capture historic moments of Oklahoma City bombing

Headlines across Oklahoma and the nation captured the horror and heartbreak of April 19, 1995 — the day terror struck Oklahoma City.

The front page of The Daily Oklahoman featured a haunting image: a lone firefighter navigating a parking lot filled with rubble, with the shattered remains of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building looming behind him.

The bold headline, "MORNING OF TERROR," captured the chaos and grief that Oklahomans faced as emergency responders and everyday citizens alike sprang into action — rescuing survivors and mourning the lives lost in the devastating bombing.

Nearly 30 years later, the site bears little resemblance to the destruction of that day. But the raw emotion and heroism of those early hours were forever etched into history through the newspapers that told the story the very next morning.

25 years ago today Americans Timothy McVeigh and accomplice Terry Nichols, in an act of Domestic Terrorism, planted a Ryder rental truck with explosives and parked it in front of a Federal Building in Oklahoma. It exploded, ripping through the Federal building and killing 168 people including 19 children. 680 more were injured and it caused over $682 million worth of city damage. Between Pearl Harbor and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Oklahoma City bombing was the deadliest deliberate attack on the United States. The two White Supremacists (and ex-U.S. military) were spouting radical right, racially-motivated ideologies. The 26 year old white McVeigh was obsessed with guns and increasing hostility toward the US Government (esp. after the bumbling Federal raid on Waco) and this was his 'revenge.' Sadly, this event seems to be increasingly forgotten. Yet in today's political climate we are seeing that same hateful ideology grow even more among Neo-Nazis, Far-Right extremists and other radical Right groups. It's important that we remind our children and their children that the 'enemy' is not someone who looks different, dresses differently, speaks differently or prays to a different God, but is someone who lacks the ability to see the value in being human at the most base level.
