Three Portraits for Lepidoptera (2014) A musical drama in one act. The Caterpillar Woman. The Butterfly Lady. The Dragonfly Nobleman.

From the Composer:

"The re-spinning of two ancient folktales, 'Lepidoptera' is the story of a young noblewoman who must hide her love of the natural world from society’s condemning gaze. When a betrothal announcement unravels her web of secrets and threatens her only friendship, she struggles to restore the fragile balance of her public and private identities."

This is one of my favorite styles to draw in, a fusion inspired by Ukiyo-e and other Asian print and costume styles. I'm pulling from a lot of different sources but I'm very happy with the way the colors and characters turned out. The Caterpillar Woman and the Butterfly Lady are actually the same person! This story is a beautiful commentary on identity, femininity and expectation.
