Are shorts acceptable in the office? Discuss.
It’s 8am on a Wednesday morning, the sun is shining, the birds are singing and it’s the only day of the week it’s going to be warmer than 16 degrees in London. If you have ever found yourself in this situation then I wouldn’t be surprised if 10minutes later you’re standing in front of the mirror asking yourself the all important wardrobe question – is it acceptable to wear shorts to work today?
Many things will run through your mind at this time:
- Do I look like a dick?
- Will people take the piss out of me?
- Will anyone else be braving the shorts today?
- Do I need to apply some fake tan? The answer to this is always NO
- Will it actually rain and then I’m going to feel really stupid?
Well we’re here to help.
The team at SmartCasual believe that if ALL the following rules apply, then it is indeed acceptable to wear shorts to the office:
- It’s warmer than 28 degrees
- You don’t have any client meetings (unless your client is the UK’s largest manufacturer of shorts, in which case you should wear shorts all year round to show your support)
- You have suitable footwear, a nice pair of loafers or white plimsolls are a great choice. Flip flops are never acceptable for men in the office.
- Your shorts should be a good fit. Not too loose and definitely not too tight.
- Ask yourself the question, do I look like I’m going to the beach? If the answer is no, then off to work you go.
Above are a few examples of how it should and shouldn’t be done.
