I think the horror potential of Obey Me is sooo overlooked.
Like sir, you're living with seven of the strongest demons in Hell. And yeah, it's easy to forget that sometimes but the stuff you can do with it?
For example, a lot of people forget that Leviathan is literally the Grand Admiral of Hell's Navy. He's been to wars and he has most definitely killed people. Every brother—one way or the other—has killed people. And the potential it has is so high it drives me insane when people don't even think about it.
Yes, the game is light hearted but come on, you live with demons, the stuff they've done (and still do) can and will be morally wrong, and God, do I love it.
The brothers are still big shots in Devildom. Right under Diavolo himself. I like to imagine that a lot of demons are scared of them. You can't look me in the eyes and tell me that a lowly demon can have an argument with Satan, for example, and not get their head blown off. Death doesn't really mean much, especially when it's a low ranked demon they could find a million of in the span of minutes. The brothers are old asf and they've seen the wars in Devildom, too. They most likely fought in them.
Now you may have the argument of "But Mammon constantly gets kicked out of casinos, he gets beaten blah blah" and to that I say; He's Mammon. No matter how pathetic he may seem he's still the second eldest. And if you ask me, one of the most emotionally intelligent and mature ones among the brothers. The reason why Mammon is so often walked over is because he doesn't show his strenght. He has the emotional capability and general strenght to not lose his cool even if he's getting insulted by a low-life who he could obliterate in a second.
But back on track, as I was saying, I believe that all of the brothers have killed people, justified or not, and I just need more fics where they're horrifying demons. Batshit insane. A flick of the wrist and blood's everywhere. The angst you could pull off with it makes my mouth water. Like, just imagine accidentally witnessing one of the brothers killing someone and act like it's nothing. THE POTENTIALLL OH LOOOORDDDDDDD
So I gave Mammon a crash out over Lesson sixteen so I'll give Satan some complicated feelings since he hadn't experienced the death of a loved one before the way the brothers had and trying to understand Belphegor's actions. Ahh suffering my beloved.
TW: Lesson sixteen, existential crisis vs poor grieving skills
Satan was curious demon, born unknowing he grew with the urge to understand everything. He could never understand how he was born, not even Lucifer knew, but he couldn't get an answer from Belphegor on why he killed Mc. Satan had never experienced the death of a loved one before, he couldn't understand why his brother would try and take away the first person he ever felt fully comfortable opening up to. It was cruel, and Satan started to understand Lucifer's actions which used to be as understandable to him as Mandarin to an American toddler but now it was Belphegor that was so foreign.
Satan slipped along the hall until he came to the attic. Belphegor had stopped sleeping in the same room as Beel since not even his twin knew how to act around him anymore. Satan looked around until he spotted a lump of blankets on the bed which would contain one sleepy demon. Satan walked over and shook the pile to summon a demon from his sleep.
"Belphie, wake up please."
Belphegor slowly crawled out of the pile "Huh wha?"
"Belphie, are you coherent?"
Belphegor groaned and stood up, moving a few steps to the door just to prove he was awake enough "Yeah."
"Why did you kill Mc?"
Belphegor fully woke at Satan's query and spoke as if it were the most obvious thing in the world "For Lilith."
"But why Belphegor? Killing Mc wouldn't bring Lilith back, it just means another person to bury."
"Because it's humans fault satan."
"It was angels who shot that arrow, not humans. Her lover probably didn't even know what she was doing. Why do you want her back? It's been years, shouldn't she be allowed to rest? Am I not enough of a sibling for you?!"
"What? No, Satan-"
"Do you regret the war?" Satan started crying, experiencing a level of personal sadness he had only ever read about "The only reason for my existence? If you resent humans so much how do you not resent me for replacing her?! Who even was she?!"
"H-Huh?"
"Did she crave knowledge as I did? Did she also love cats? Did she love the smell of books and the words on their pages as much as I do? Did she hope to understand connections? Was she also angry because no matter what she did she couldn't connect to you and the others because you always saw someone else? And what of Mc?! Was killing Mc really worth it when this woman that is dead remains dead and the rest of us have to lose a loved one? What of us Belphegor?!" Satan's voice quieted but held a gentle crack "What of us?"
Belphegor backed up, he backed right into Lucifer. Lucifer made sure Belphegor was standing stable while everyone else was peeking their head in, Lucifer the only one that entered. They had been spying since Asmo saw Satan go up to the attic and everyone wanted to make sure things were ok considering the last time. Lucifer moved past Belphegor once he was certain the youngest would not fall and went straight to Satan to give him a hug. Satan accepted it although he didn't hug back.
"you're not a replacement for Lilith, Satan, you are my child. I'm sorry we made you feel that way, we never stopped grieving because she's still going to be dead but we should have made sure it didn't affect you as it did, I'm sorry Satan."
Belphegor stared at Lucifer holding Satan who wasn't resisting. They really had grown closer while Belphegor was locked away. Belphegor stood there alone as the others started piling into the room to cuddle around Satan. The others spoke their apologies around Satan since he really didn't deserve to feel so awfully as Belphegor stood aside unsure of how to act now. It felt more to Belphegor now that he was watching an event in which he didn't exist. The others started to guide Satan out, taking him to see the cats so he could feel better. Lucifer remained a moment to look back at Belphegor who was watching with a gaze almost like an apology before he turned and disappeared as well. Belphegor whispered one single "I'm sorry", but mo one was there to receive it.
Seeing Satan interact with strays around the RAD campus gives you an idea. You decide to try it out when he's alone in the household library later.
As usual, he invites you to sit with him. When no one else is around, it's fine if you sit in his lap. It's your special privilege.
You take a peek at what he's reading. It looks boring, though his eyes are glued to the page. His blue irises shift in the light as they go back and forth across the page. It's a pretty sight.
When you raise a hand to his cheek, Satan leans his face into your palm. A natural gesture. He doesn't even look up. It signals the perfect time to put your plan into action. You begin to move your fingertips, gently scratching around the bottom of his ear in small circles. Just barely grazing his skin with your nails.
He stiffens with a look of pure confusion. Concentration broken, his gaze is finally directed at you.
Now that he's not distracted by the novel, your other hand makes its way to the crown of his head for more scritches. You go back and forth, mimicking the satisfying way Satan always does it to the strays around town. His soft blonde hair parts easily as you lightly scratch at his scalp.
"What do you think you're doing?" A blush spreads across his entire face, from cheek to ear. Perhaps your experiment went too far.
"I thought you'd like this," you admit. It seems to have the opposite effect, though. Instead of relaxing, Satan was straining his entire body. His grip on the chair's arm dug into its upholstery. You drop your hands and opt to lean against him instead.
He places his book aside. "I do. Why did you stop?"
"Really?" With newfound confidence, you graze two fingernails against the bottom of his chin, working in small zig zags. "So you like this?"
His breathing turns erratic. Satan grabs your wrist in an oddly strong hold and orders, "wait. Not here."
In a rush, he clutches you against his chest and stands up. There's so much force behind his movement, the armchair skids back several paces. It'll be faster if Satan carries you, and you can keep scratching his chin while he walks.
"Come with me, we'll try this out again in my room."
