(yeets another RWBY crossover snip, this time from the bunny that got the ball rolling in the first place)
...
Holding his breath in fear, he inched out of the brush to reach for the sandwich. It was big and thick and smelled so good that he couldn’t resist crouching there for just a moment rather than immediately flee. He took a careful bite out of it, enjoying the crunch of the green things inside as much as the flavor of the meat and white things —bread—. Another bite, then another, because he hadn’t eaten anything more than some berries and roots since the last time the man visited a few days ago, and he suddenly remembered he was out in the open. He looked up sharply.
Gold eyes stared back, wide in a pale face, and even as he froze in place from fear, a part of him couldn’t help but realize that-.
For the first time, this human smelled scared.
This human who could destroy entire packs of monsters … was just as scared of him as he was of the human.
For a long moment, neither of them moved. Neither of them were brave enough to move, even though the human was so much stronger and could kill him in an instant. Then he warily shifted back, feet scuffing against the dirt and holding the sandwich close in case he needed to borrow wings and fly into the trees to escape. The human actually flinched at the sound, then breathed shakily and finally moved. The human slowly put his hands on his knees, keeping them away from the stick, almost like he was afraid of scaring him away. Then the man said something. The words were strange. All jumbled up and … different from how words were supposed to sound. But then, all the humans here talked that way. Not like the flickers and fragments of memory in his head, where words made sense and songs were pretty and safe.
Fear warred with curiosity and gratitude —the human wasn’t attacking, he wasn’t hurting, he had left out food … for him?— and so he only backed up a step or two, close enough to disappear into the brush if the human changed his mind. The man’s mouth pinched, like he was unhappy with the retreat, but his voice was still soft as he spoke again. He wished he could understand the words. He tried to come up with his own words to say, but it had been so long since he spoke. Longer even than waking up here. The last time he’d spoken had been —For Hearth and Home-hold-the-line-for-Hearth-and— … a long time ago. So long he wasn’t sure what to say. Or how to say it.
But he still knew how to sing. He sung to himself sometimes, when things got too quiet and lonely. The monsters never minded when he sang, they never cared, and songs were easier than words, especially when he was scared. He flexed nervous fingers on his sandwich and tried to think of a song. Any song. But the only one he could think of was a lullaby, because he sang those most often when he was lonely. Still … it was better than nothing, and the human still looked scared too —though why he was scared when he was the one with all the power was a mystery—.
~~
“Hush n-now m’ Storeen,”
“C-close you’re eyes ’n sleep.”
“Wal’zing t-the waves,”
“Diving … d-deep.”
“Star are s-shining bright,”
“Wind is on t-the rise,”
“Whispering words … long lost … lullabies.”
~~
The human’s eyes were wide again, but … he didn’t look as scared. Instead he looked … confused. Even … happy?
He tensed when the human slid off the log he’d been sitting on, but instead of standing or grabbing for his stick, the human knelt on the ground and sang back in real words, not the jumbled things humans used here.
~~
“Oh won’t you come with me,”
“Where the moon is made of gold.”
“And in the morning sun, we’ll be sailing.”
“Oh won’t you come with me,”
“Where the ocean meets the sky.”
“And as the clouds roll by,”
“We’ll sing the song of the sea…”
~~
The man’s words were clumsy, like they hadn’t been used in a long, long time, but they were real words and it was the same song, the song that was important. Only- only family knew that song. Only Clan.
This human was Clan?
The human smiled very faintly, like he was thinking the same things, and slowly held out a hand, “Hello there,” he said in real words, “You … are a very long way from home, aren’t you?”
He pressed himself against the tree trunk for support, too surprised to make a sound for a minute. Then he swallowed and hummed a noise of agreement. Words were still not coming easily, so he just hummed a few notes of the song. The human exhaled, slow and careful like something hurt, but he didn’t smell like blood, and he didn’t act hurt as he kept holding out his hand, “Do you have a name? Do you have a Clan?”
Clan. Yes he- he had a Clan. He had a name too, but he couldn’t remember… But he remembered Clan. Clan was too important to forget. If he could just remember the word for it, the sound of it on his tongue, “K- Kha-.”
Gold eyes lit up faintly, “Khara.” He nodded, glad that the human had said it and … hopeful. If he knew the Clan name, was he from the Clan too? The man blinked and took another slow breath, “I was Khara too once. A very long time ago.”
