Knowing the Daybreak lore now… and knowing this was the second time Laura Roslin lost her family in one day
After the screening I attended at the IFC, my friend and I were lucky enough to catch a talk/Q&A with director Mark Jenkin, moderated by Vul
One very funny (at least to me, and it's my blog, so you're getting it) sidebar to this:
At karaoke the other night, a guy did "The Boys Are Back in Town" (excellent karaoke choice), and a few of us were talking about the melancholy undercurrent of it: "Jukebox in the corner blastin' out my favorite song/ the nights are gettin' warmer, it won't be long/ won't be long 'til summer comes/ now that the boys are here again"-- but the summer has not come yet. And when it does come, could it ever be as good as it was, those nights at Johnny's place? Again, can you ever really "go home"?
something about slade getting violent when he sees his own degeneracy reflected in other men/opportunistically reframing those aspects of himself that he hates into convenient external threats he can punish and eliminate and defend his family against

Saruhiko realizing that when he thinks of the stupid Saru nickname, he hears it in Yata's voice now. The way it sounds from Niki's mouth has been completely forgotten.
And we’re right back to the Hozier-coded thing I mentioned a few weeks ago with the soulmate ask XD I really like the idea that Fushimi only likes to hear his name when Yata says it though, like the only time it really feels like a name and not a taunt is when Yata says it. What he doesn’t think of as much is the ‘stupid Saru’ or ‘monkey’ nicknames, to Fushimi surely those will never stop sounding like anything but Niki. But then when Niki dies and Fushimi finally moves out of that house imagine those words just gradually change too, until he can only hear them in Yata’s voice and not Niki’s. Yata will be complaining that Fushimi didn’t do the dishes when it’s his turn or he left dirty laundry in the middle of the room again and Fushimi just shrugs, Yata’s like come in you stupid monkey help me out here. Once those words would have echoed in someone else’s voice and stung but this is Misaki’s voice and how did a word become so different, when it’s spoken by someone else. Imagine this even during the betrayal years too, when Fushimi’s riling Yata up and Yata gets mad at him. Fushimi kinda expects that those words will twist now, when he’s broken everything, but even after all this he finds that he can’t actually recall how it sounded when Niki said ‘monkey.’ The words have just been entirely painted in Yata’s colors now, even with how hard Fushimi is trying to break everything else around him, somehow Yata’s voice saying ‘monkey’ hasn’t changed at all.
Julia Roberts can do anything she sets her mind to.
