I saw your post about the music in A Chorus Line and I think its distinctive sound may have something to do with two primary factors. 1) Marvin Hamlisch composed music for films before ACL and 2) it was conceived as music for dancers, not for Broadway stars, so it’s almost like a score full of dance arrangements with really only one “standard” song.
