Power and Responsibility: The Onus of Institutional Norms
TL;DR: Even when your side holds power, respecting institutional norms and guardrails is crucial for long-term stability and democracy.
Power is a double-edged sword.
When your side wins, it feels like the world is your oyster. You can finally push through the policies you’ve championed, make the changes you’ve longed for, and set the course for the future. But here’s the catch: with great power comes great responsibility. (Yes, I know, it’s a cliché, but it’s true.) The onus is on you to uphold the institutional norms and guardrails that keep our democracy intact, even when it might be tempting to bend the rules in your favor.
In recent weeks, we’ve seen the consequences of ignoring these norms. The chaos in Congress over the Speaker’s election is a stark reminder of what happens when institutional guardrails are disregarded. It’s a cautionary tale that underscores the importance of maintaining these norms, regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on.
Here’s why respecting institutional norms is critical:
Stability: Institutions provide a framework that ensures stability. They are the bedrock upon which our democracy is built, offering predictability and continuity.
Fairness: Guardrails ensure that power is not abused. They create a level playing field where everyone, regardless of political affiliation, has a fair shot.
Trust: Upholding norms builds trust in the system. When people believe that the rules are followed, they are more likely to engage and participate in the democratic process.
When your side is in power, it’s easy to overlook these principles. But remember, power is fleeting. The tables will turn, and when they do, you’ll want those same norms and guardrails to protect your interests. So, the next time you’re tempted to sidestep a norm for short-term gain, ask yourself: is it worth the long-term cost?
In the end, the question we must all ask ourselves is this: Are we willing to sacrifice the integrity of our institutions for temporary victories, or will we rise to the occasion and uphold the principles that sustain our democracy? The choice is ours, and the future depends on it.
The Onus of Healing: When Narcissists Weaponize Therapy Language
TL;DR: Narcissists often misuse therapy language to manipulate and control, placing the onus of healing on their victims.
“It’s your responsibility to heal.” A phrase that sounds empowering, right? But in the hands of a narcissist, it becomes a weapon.
In recent times, we’ve seen a disturbing trend where individuals with narcissistic tendencies co-opt the language of therapy and self-help. They twist these concepts to manipulate and control those around them, often leaving their victims feeling more confused and isolated than ever. The onus of healing, which should be a personal journey, is instead used as a tool for blame and deflection.
Gaslighting with a twist: Narcissists might tell you that your feelings are valid, only to later dismiss them as overreactions. This subtle form of gaslighting leaves you questioning your reality.
DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender): They might claim they’re the ones being hurt by your “unhealed trauma,” flipping the script to make you the aggressor.
Love-bombing with a catch: They’ll shower you with affection and understanding, only to withdraw it when you don’t meet their expectations of “healing.”
For those caught in this web, it’s crucial to recognize these patterns. Trust your instincts. If something feels off, it probably is. Remember, healing is a personal journey, not a weapon to be wielded against you.
If you’ve been gaslit or manipulated, know that your experiences are valid. You’re not alone, and there are steps you can take to reclaim your narrative:
Educate yourself: Understanding narcissistic behavior can help you see through the manipulation.
Set boundaries: It’s okay to say no and protect your mental space.
Seek support: Whether it’s friends, family, or a therapist, having a support system is vital.
The onus of healing should never be used as a tool for manipulation. It’s about personal growth and understanding, not control. So, how will you take back your power and begin your true healing journey?
Did you watch Onus? What do you think about it? When I read the synopsis- I was hooked, but unfortunately the delivery wasn’t great 😢. I could barely get through it tbh. I appreciate they didn’t have a big budget. It really had potential. I totally would love Anto do something else similar - I love these types of stories.
Yesssss the story is such an interesting one but, like you said, it was hard to get through. I’d love to see him write again!
