There was a lot of debate about the animatronics and secondary genders, but at the end of the day, it was decided to make the Glamrock-era line without programmed secondary genders. Maintaining artificial scents was very expensive and was agreed to fall into the 'uncanny valley.'
HOWEVER, in the Daycare they found that younger children weren't able to respond as well to Sun and Moon because of their lack of scent (a kind of wire/cloth mother situation), and it's been causing issues.
So part of my job as the human Daycare Assistant is to scent Sun and Moon like crazy: we spend about half an hour before opening, doing a lot of scent transfer, so I smell a little bit like metal and the Attendant smells enough like me that the kids process us as a bonded pair.
It's unconventional, but it works for the younger ones! And with the older ones, we just tell them Sun/Moon smells like me because we spend so much time working together, and that works well enough for the questions.
