Setting Out Wreaths
Slept right through Deborah, Tim and Sue getting up and going to the airport. Hope I don’t sleep through my turn to go to the airport tomorrow morning. At least it’s a little bit later.
I did not get out of bed until right about 11 a.m., EST. When I checked my blood sugar it was up again, to 160. Turns out that in addition to all the carbs last night, I forgot to take my meds afterwards.
So I started my day with a shower and then enjoyed another piece of the egg and sausage casserole, along with a cup of coffee.
Eventually Deborah and I headed over to pick up Sarah, and we went to the Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery to place wreaths on the gravesites of our family members. Families are invited to do that today. Tomorrow, volunteers from the Horton Wreath Society, started by our mother, Jeanne Banks, will place wreaths on all the remaining sites at the cemetery.
After we finished with the wreaths and Sarah wrapped up some remaining details regarding Boe’s market, Deborah drove over to Windsor, where her pharmacy is located.
Then we stopped by the Chesapeake home of Aunt Mary Ellen and her son Brian Lee to drop off some leftovers from last night’s reception. They were unable to make it yesterday because they both had bad colds. They texted their thanks a little after we let them know the food was on their porch.
From there drove over to the Oozlefinch Brewery, located on the grounds of the former Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia.
The Oozlefinch is the unofficial historic mascot of the Air Defense Artillery and, formerly, of the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps. It is portrayed as a featherless bird that flies backwards at supersonic speeds and carries weapons. The Oozlefinch has been portrayed in many different forms through its history. The many stories about the origins of the Oozlefinch agree that the legend began in 1905 at Ft. Monroe, then home of the Coast Artillery Corps.
We picked up something to eat from the Deutscher Imbiss, a German food truck parked outside that’s a favorite of my sisters. Then we went into the brewery for a drink. Deborah and Sarah had a beer, and I got a soft drink to go with my currywurst and French fries. The girls brought their food home with them, while mine was devoured rather quickly.
After dropping Sarah off at home, we got back to Deborah’s house. She took her evening shower while I started packing for my flight out in the morning. It departs Norfolk at 8 a.m., so we’ll need to leave Smithfield about 6 a.m. so I can arrive an hour before departure time. One hour in advance works for a relatively small airport like Norfolk.
I signed in for the flight via the United app this morning. If all goes well, I’ll be back in Eugene by 1 p.m., PST, and Nancy has promised to be there waiting for me. My exciting adventures during the flight west will be reported tomorrow night in this place. Stay tuned!
