I got home, excited to try on my new hiking shoes that I ordered from @zappos for my trip out to Death Valley in a few weeks.

Imagine my delight when I open the box to find one size 9.5 and one size 6.5. Hint: my feet haven’t been a 6.5 since I was like....8. This is not going to work. So I go do their chat thing prepared for a headache.

No need to return the mismatch pair. New pair will be here Monday. And a $30 coupon for the fuck up.

New Luggage for the Trip

So before now I didn’t have any luggage to my name. For family vacations, I would usually just put my clothes into my moms suitcase and everything else would go into a drawstring bag that I’d carry. Somehow I thought that maybe a drawstring bag won’t work for me for 5 weeks in South Korea (although how nice would that be?). So I bit the bullet and bought my own luggage (thx mom). It’s London Fog which is a whole lot more than just a little pricy, but thank god for half off Black Friday sales, am I right? There are a lot of different pieces in this line (The Andover Collection), but I got what I thought I would need for this trip and any trip in the future (hopefully I’ll get to use this luggage a lot). I purchased the 25” spinner, the 21” spinner and the 16” cosmetic bag (which I’m using as a carry on).

I haven’t used them enough to give an accurate review but I can touch on a few things. The wheels are a huge bonus! Instead of 2 there are 4, 360 degree wheels which makes pushing and pulling it around a breeze. It’s also very quiet so when I’m walking around in the airport it doesn’t sound like a train or perhaps a herd of angry bees following me. I noticed when I was looking at luggage a lot of them are starting to have 4 wheels, but some still have 2 wheels. Typically the 2 wheeled suitcases are a tad cheaper than the 4 wheeled ones, but if you plan on rolling them around a lot, or imagine that it might get a little heavy, I strongly advise 4 wheels. You can’t imagine what a difference it makes! Also you don’t have to worry about your luggage falling over. Another thing is that the smaller spinner nestles nicely into the bigger one.

This will be so helpful on trips where you want to take more back than you bring. I plan to pack in the small one and put it inside the larger one on the way to Korea but on the way back I will have another entire suitcase to pack all the things that I might buy. There are strategically placed straps on the luggage which makes carrying it, moving it, and picking it up very easy. There is one at the top, one on the side and one on the bottom. When I first saw the one of the bottom, I was a little confused, I didn’t know if it would help or not, but just by messing around with them I subconsciously grabbed the bottom strap to pick it up to put on my bed. It distributes to weight of the suitcase to two straps so (1) the straps are less likely to wear and tear and (2) it feels lighter. Inside the large spinner, it came with the clear TSA approved bag for liquids so I didn’t have to worry about buying that. The only drawback is that there isn’t a predetermined way to attach the cosmetic bag/carry on to the luggage so you don’t have to hold both, but I just slip the straps of the bag over the metal arms of the suitcase and it just sits there while i pull it, however it can’t stand by itself like that because the bag throws off the balance and it will fall forward.

I can’t wait until I can use this luggage for real! The countdown has begun!!

New travel thingys! L to R (in a roundabout manner) we have; • Berlitz Spanish (self explanatory and v important) Im a big fan of all thins Berlitz. • Little, though surprisingly heavy, locks to keep my things a bit safer, I hope! Watch this space for the first time I forget the codes. • Really cool travel adaptor, this has 4 USB ports (everything I have charges through USB as I’ve decided not to take my camera) and detachable heads for the UK, US, EU, AUS and Middle East, I think? It has 4 of ‘em anyway and it’s gonna be super handy. • Caxton FX prepaid currency card. This is a Mastercatd onto which I can load different currencies to avoid non sterling transaction fees etc. In foreign countries (at the moment loaded with USD). • US greencard! Yay I’m allowed in! (Wait, yay?) Unlike pretty much every country ever where you fill in a landing card on the plane or at your arrival airport, the US requires you apply amd pay in advance for the go ahead to fly there. • Super cool water filter bottle. This bottle will allow me to drink any water anywhere! People have taken this to India and other such places of dubious water supplies and lives to tell the tale. The filter lasts for 1600L and the filter can be removed for longevity. And yes Ive decorated it already.

So now I have to sort; • LA couchsurfs, • Mexico City couchsurf, • Flight from Mexico City to San Cristobal, • Flight out of Mexico (or they won’t let me into the US) • Travel Insurance • Travel cash • Learn Spanish (casual...) • Pack

I think that’s it… that’s quite enough to keep me going I think. I’m off to the Doctor’s for a health MOT and to discuss any necessary inoculations! Fun fun!
