The first piece Brahms wrote after his mother died was the Horn Trio, Op. 40, an exquisite testament of his love for her. I believe the third movement is Brahms' heart laid bare as he struggles with grief and the painful memory of his loss.  

One of the great lyrical hornists of our day, William Barnewitz performs with Frank Almond, violin and William Wolfram, piano.
