Microsoft brings its server expertise to the Open Compute project
The editor jumps away and announced that it joined the Open Compute project initiated by Facebook. It provides specifications for the design of server. It also makes available in Open Source code of its system of management of the chassis.
Microsoft joined the Open Compute project with the design of servers dedicated to services clouds. It is a strong announcement expected on the first day of the Open Compute Summit taking place today in San Francisco. Through the promotion of its hardware specification in data centers, Microsoft could find an opportunity to place Windows Server instead of Linux which is generally preferred by companies of the web for a question of license and openness.
Patrick Moorhead, founder and president of Insight Moor & amp; Strategy research firm, notes that Microsoft “try to have a voice in the community, because he did did not before. However, he does not believe that the editor ‘can convert web companies to its own server software. The Open Compute project is largely oriented towards Open Source in contrast with the model of Microsoft based on proprietary software and pay services.
Improvements in several sectors
Bill Laing, Vice President, Cloud and business at Microsoft, announced on a blog that the servers of the firm have improvements over traditional servers: 40% of cost less, 15% more power and 50% less time for deployment. The environmental issue has taken into account with a reduction of wiring needs, which represents a saving of 1770 km of cable to a weight of 10,000 tones to 1 million servers in the editor.
Kushagra Vaid, Director of Engineering server at Microsoft said in a blog post that a commercial offer would soon be unveiled for partners who develop products based on the specifications of the firm. In managing more than a million servers and offering more than 200 services to over one billion customers in 90 markets, special attention is given to the design of systems, adds Mr. Vaid, as simplicity, modularity in design and agility in logistics.
An opening of the code of the chassis management software
Initiated by Facebook to reduce the cost of its equipment, the Open Compute project aims to share the specifications and best practices on the design of the hardware such as servers in data centers. Bill Laing says on his blog that Microsoft and Facebook are the only providers of cloud to publish specifications for servers. Last August, the social network has indicated that he also worked on an Open Source switch for datacenter.
Finally, the Redmond company also wants to contribute to the project source code management system. To do this, it publishes via its subsidiary Microsoft Open Technologies Open Source code for the software of management of the chassis. It is available on the sharing site GitHub and offers features such as diagnosis of the server or the control of the fan and the power supply.
