I never realised or appreciated how busy this environment was and how many faces pass in and out of its doors.

Before i had stepped anywhere near a hospital (never mind a theatre)I had asked and inquired about placement at university with the other eager first years and was told various humorous horror stories which did put me at lease, however many found it a struggle to describe the perioperative environment and just stated wait until your experience it for yourself, make your own judgement. Which was true nothing really could have prepared you for the environment it was a sink or swim arena full of strong personalities and shy students from various disciplines such as; nurses, radiographers and medical students.

We were introduced to the clinical educators, which was reassuring to have that support their if/when we needed it (I didn’t realise such roles existed which was honestly a relief and great to hear). I was worried and apprehensive about my mentor, I hoped whoever he or she was they were approachable and understanding of 1st year students (which mine was I was very lucky!). I had never been in a theatre or even really a hospital so I had to get used to the polices and understanding the way the perioperative environment works. I was terrified of doing something wrong that I wouldn’t normally do because I was nervous. I was also afraid of people asking me questions expecting me to know the answer, or there was a certain expectations of 1st year students that I didn’t know/ understand.

However all my concerns and anxieties upon reflection seem kind of amusing now, I understand everyone gets anxious when starting a new path in life some more so than others but really, everyone was truly understanding and welcoming and interested in what I had to say. Also it is true what everyone said you have to make your own judgement and opinions and not let other people’s experiences or assumptions influence you.

I learnt a lot about myself at my first time within a clinical area as a student ODP but at this early stage in my career I learnt just to be myself, relax and be respectful of others also show that you want to learn and your are passionate about your work and people will warm to you!

Just my story and to anyone starting within their perioperative journey i know its scary/exciting/terrrifying/ intimidating i was so nervous and anxious but by the end of your first year you will almost feel human again! Ill let you know how the 2nd year goes.....

Exams are over

Post exam I feel tired haha but nervously awaiting my results the OSCE went okay I forgot a few things but overall I think It went okay :) Now I just have to gather myself start tidying my house (because damn it gets messy around exam time haha) and prepare for my last week of urology scrub and last week of placement in my first year within the next few weeks I will post reflecting about my first year and what it entailed and how it went. Now however I must get back to tidying and ignore the blistering sunshine pouring through my windows!

after the viva i cant suriva (dunno where im going with this one)

i just want to move on and move up and welcome .... a break

i had so many goals and targets this year and so far have achieved 0

its weird because i know i need to study but yet i put it off lots and lots and lots for different things like sleep and erm watching house (i could learn something? no thats me rationalizing it.)

can someone give let me borrow their power up or something?

its coming up to the end of the first year (well officially in aug) and i just thought before i started my degree by the end of the first year i'd have some sort of knowledge ... i mean people keep catching me out with questions and generally have no idea how/what/why the answer and if they ask me i guess i should know them?!

And at uni we did this i guess mid-module pop quiz just to ascertain what we knew (which apparently isn't a lot and put me in a bad mood)

I find it hard to cover everything (that i feel we need to cover) getting my head around equipment (is the biggest head-ache) and then identifying anatomy/physiological aspects surrounding anesthesia and surgery, identifying the anesthetist needs and surgeon needs, our role, our professional responsibilities *enter head ache* amongst many other things.

right enough of that and more organization is needed

Patients

I had the most amazing patient today I was recovering a vascular theatre. The patient came in as an emergency and had a pseudoaneurysm in their groin which had given them quite a scare! But that was nothing this patients history was extensive and complicated and this was basically another notch added to the surgery belt. I felt sad/bad (honestly it broke my heart) when the patient broke down in tears after being so strong and admitted they were fed up with their broken body (patients words). This made me reflect I mean we see patients day-in-day-out and being within the perioperative environment we only get a snap shot of there lives, past medical and social history I have witnessed countless surgeries and had not fully been aware of what happens to them after because I have been so busy I guess tying to adapt to a new environment and learning clinical skills and have been caught up in the excitement of new experiences and learning opportunities, that something so simple like talking to your patients when they are at there most vulnerable is critical to their mentality and well being! And I just want to take this moment to thank that patient, my patient honestly you changed my perspective my attitude you have opened my eyes today :) Ps I hope you get a new kidney soon.
