The shadows burst across the room, inky tendrils spreading and sliding over the floor, the walls and ceiling. Several long shards crept over to the sofa at the room's far side, caressing the cheeks of the woman asleep there and shrouding her in a black darker than that of the night around her. Her soft sleeping breaths the only sounds in this new blanket of vantablack shadow. The Goblin King gazed at her from his perch, as he had done for many nights now, and after looking his fill, took several steps towards her until he could have touched her with his own hand. Her breathing, still the only sound, changed. Clearly sensing a presence, he backed away, back into the inky depths of the corner.
Many hours passed, until the slightest hints of dawn arrived, weakening his tendrils until they were almost transparent, like any normal shadow. The woman stirred across the room and, just as she opened her eyes, he stepped back through the last remaining shadow to his castle where he would wait for night to fall again
