Have you ever had something happen to you that is completely mundane, but also somehow weirdly unlikely? Don’t know what I mean? Let me explain with a story.
I live in the country, and in the country there is always someone or something that, knowingly or unknowingly, you have beef with. Whether it be the shitty neighbour who lets their dog chase your livestock (but who you wave and say hi to like it’s no big deal), or the local grocery store that no longer stocks the good butter chicken mix.
For the last five months I have had beef with a traffic light. They’ve been “fixing” the bridge near my house, or rather, they were GOING to fix the bridge, but put up the light and the scaffolding and proceeded to abandon ship for four months (apparently they had the wrong size rivets?!). Anyway, for the last five months on the way to work I have gotten the red light EVERY SINGLE DAY, except TWICE!!! Statistically unlikely? You bet your ass it is. I have tried leaving earlier. I have tried leaving later. I have tried eldritch curses. I have thought seriously about sabotage. The only thing that works, the ONLY THING, is having someone else in the car.
It has become clear that the light hates me, specifically. At this point I am considering exorcism as an option (for the light, not me). Or maybe a sacrifice to the traffic light gods, who I have clearly angered. The only thing that gets me through sitting there every f*cking morning is imagining yeeting the bastard thing off the bridge, or better yet, into the Sun.
It is my mundane, yet statistically unlikely nightmare.
