My Orange October
There’s no perfect harmony to the underside of an orange canopy the brilliance of summer’s light that made all things possible has turned the cold stars…colder This poem becomes my defense against my orange October Until I walk awhile tasting the fall air passing a window with a faint glow from an orange lamp do I understand… If I stand, in shadow- less silence listening, watching everything becomes artistic and solitary brushed in a burst of fruition in every shade of orange
Weighed and Measured
When the scale leans back on itself, away from the warrant of heat, we object as the light articulates into a bruise of skin and desiccation.
The balance shifts towards the shortage of hours—passion abated in an orientation of shadow and the foreknowledge of imminent rain.
This is only a small wind, a breath and a half, in which we pause for one last exuberance of character previously unknown.
This is how we ruse for one night—a stratagem of masquerade and illusion, not unlike the subconscious maneuvering of dreams.
We hope for a cornucopia of dainty amusement and delight, so we ask with a polite knock on the door of the gift god.
Only to hear she thinks of the artifice as presumption and greed— the crone-god obscures her reality with sour countenance.
Flee—somewhere—but the warmth has gone south with birds and other creatures of skin thinned by stages and the havoc
of time, which is measured in the change of rich colour to something that composes like grey—wait—not yet.
First, quilt yourself in the poise of red Maple and yellow Aspen. Disregard the old crone-god’s pinched expression of distaste.
Cleave the chaff and sway the balance—create a collage of years able to sustain the withering chorus of autumn.
Orange October.
Crisp wind glides past me Leaving me cold everywhere Except beneath my jacket, My heart is warmed. Mandarin coloured leaf Falls to the pavement and A boot walks over it, Whispering a crunch. The town is painted in a mix Of red, brown, yellow And every shade In between. Smell of spices in the air Casually kindles my hunger, Sends me home to make Myself a mug of hot cocoa. Its the time of the year that Brings a feast for my senses And lets my spirit roam free. Month of haunted houses, yeah, But the ghosts haunting my mind have gone on vacation. Just another page in the Calendar, but these thirty one Days give me an escape, Give me an annual cleanse. I can enjoy the year all over But the pumpkin scented streets, Late autumn, blooming marigolds And all things sober make me fall in love With this Orange October.
-Hira // Favourite month.
I absolutely love this month. Thank you again for a wonderful prompt @sarahmariepardy
Halloween Spirit
With red rain boots and his hood, Jack
Thread dead leaves through sidewalk cracks
As decoration for his ceiling
Underground to hide the lack
/
Of life, but Jack just wanted more
He kidnapped then, not one, but four
Illuminating jack-o'-lanterns
From a festive porch
/
And travelling, while in between
He captured in a pocket jean
Jeweled fireflies. His pocket
Was much bigger than it seemed
/
But no pocket could contain
The spirit bursting through his veins
Jack grinned, and watched his black hole
Turn to a candle orange cave
(a rain)
