Interested In Studying Astrology? Here’s My Guide On How to Get Started
So you’ve decided that you want to study astrology, that’s great! Astrology is definitely an interesting topic and I implore you to continue expanding your knowledge. You won’t regret it! Now let me begin the guide! *this guide is intended for people who want to learn western geocentric astrology*
Step 1: Memorize the Sun Signs
If you’re on my blog you probably already have base knowledge that there is a lot more to astrology than just you ‘star sign’(the proper term is “Sun Sign”). With that being said, you should already know that the sun sign is just a small part of the picture. However, It is the base knowledge you need to build off of in order to get a better understanding of everything else.
You should work to memorize the order of the signs, the houses they rule, what they represent, the planet they’re ruled by, their general archetype, their traits, and the part of life they represent.
It’s so important to know these things. For instance, you may come across a placement like neptune in the first house. You may forget what Neptune represents, however because you know it is associated with Pisces and you remember what Pisces represents, easily you’ll be able to make a connection between what this placement may represent by remembering this fact. I do this when I have brain farts or a need to refresh my memory, and it’s very helpful. However, it should not be used as a crutch because there are some meanings that the houses, planets, and signs hold that differ from one another. Even if they are directly associated with one another, they wouldn’t exist if there were no differences between them.
Knowing this information will also make interpretations much quicker. You won’t have to flip through your notes or your book and read a long passage in order to get just PART of the facts you need to interpret something. It’s time consuming and you burn out quicker.
In my opinion, a lot of astrology in general starts at knowing the basic knowledge surrounding the sun signs. I genuinely believe that without at least knowing the suns signs, you’ll be way more confused than someone who doesn’t know what a birth chart is.
Step 2: Invest in books
There’s a lot you can learn from tumblr, that is fact. However, you won’t always be able to access the internet, and in general cloud storage isn’t as reliable as physical storage. You’re better off buying a few books to reference so you don’t have to search the interwebs everytime you need to refresh your memory.
There’s also a lot in books that you can’t find on tumblr or the internet. And the physical structure is usually cleaner and more pleasant to the eye.
However, be careful to make sure the book has the information you’re looking for in it. Some books focus solely on sun signs, some focus on health, some focus on Horary astrology, etc. Make sure it covers the topics you want to learn about.
Also, make sure you buy more than one book to either fact check or expand on a previous book. Some books don’t go far enough in depth on certain things, some books have different interpretations, and some books are written by people who know nothing about astrology except for the sun signs. It’s important to have more than one source.
Step 3: Memorize the planets and houses
It’s important to memorize the importance of certain planets and asteroids. Each planet differs in importance and meaning. Also, as mentioned in step 1, though the planets, signs, and houses have associations with each other, they still have differences.
I did this after memorizing the signs and I personally think it’s the next best thing to expand on because it gives you a base feel of what it will be like interpreting a birth chart. It’s kind of a lot, and it just gives you an idea of interpreting how different placements work together.
Plus, you wouldn’t be able to do this without understanding the signs first. There’s a lot of sources that will interpret this for you though so, you aren’t at the hardest part just yet
I’m throwing Houses in this too but, that doesn’t mean to study both at the same time. Learn them at a pace that is comfortable for YOU.
Learning how the houses and planets, and signs work together will be where it’s a little more difficult. It’s not that easy to find sources that interpret all three at the same time for free.
Step 4: Start Familiarizing yourself with birth charts
There are plenty of online calculators you can use to help you get familiar with birth charts. You can get used to looking at the signs, houses, and planet symbols without having words directly next to them. It also makes interpreting the full chart later much quicker.
It’s so important to get familiar with the structure and symbols because once you start interpreting aspects you’re not gonna want to have to keep checking every second. It’s already time consuming with just the houses, signs, and planets, but it gets even more time consuming with aspects!
Step 5: Start Memorizing the Aspects
Since at this point you should have some type of familiarity with birth charts, background info on the houses, the signs, and the plants. Now in order to really get a better idea of how your placements are expressed, it’s time to learn the aspects.
Make sure you memorize their symbols, degrees, and what they represent.
It’s important to memorize the degrees as well because. You may not always be able to use a calculator that calculates it for you, some calculations are excluded, and some calculators are wrong! So it’s important to know the degrees so that you can calculate I calculated aspects and so that you can correct wrong calculations.
Once you’ve memorized the aspects you should also try familiarizing yourself with the aspect patterns. Knowing your aspects will help you easily find patterns that will explain how the placements work together
Step 6: Keep expanding your knowledge base
At this point, you should have ample understanding of the chart and how to interpret it. However, the learning never stops. There’s so many more things to learn in astrology. There’s specific chart shapes that signify different personality types, how well the person can balance their energy, what struggles they’ll have etc.
There’s specific degrees on the chart that indicate how the energy of a certain placement will be expressed. There’s Decans in each sign that help interpret this. There’s different chart types, like Horary, Draconic, Sidreal, heliocentric, Topocentric, composite, etc.
There’s even different branches of astrology! Vedic, Chinese astrology, Mayan astrology, etc. there’s even astrologers who like to consider some of these different types into their own work! This field never stops, it only expands forever. It’ll probably take a lifetime to master all of it, if it’s even possible. That’s why you should never stop expanding your knowledge base.
If you’re seriously looking at astrology as a form of income, you should definitely continue expanding your knowledge. People love to get things from experienced and educated people. And in this field where there are no real certifications except for experience, it's incredibly important that you continue expanding your knowledge, especially because you have to prove that you’re knowledgeable. And just in general if you want to get a better understanding of your life, the people around you, etc. Also, don’t rush yourself. It takes time to reach a proficient amount of education. If you’re rushing because you want to set up a blog or something, you’re only going to set yourself up for failure.
I hope this guide helped and I’m glad that you read all the way through. Please let me know what you think and if my guide helped. Thank you!
Astrology 101: The Planets and Prominent Asteroids
So to start everything plain and simple, this post is about The Planets in astrology. Below are brief explanations of the Luminaries(which are the sun and the moon), The other personal planets, the outer planets, as well as some of the most well-known asteroids in astrology.
The Luminaries
In astrology, the luminaries refer to the Sun and the Moon. Those of you new to astrology may be wondering, “How are the moon and the sun considered Planets when one, is literally a star and the other is a large rock?” Well, in mainstream western astrology the system is Geocentric. Have you ever wondered why there is no sign referred to as your ‘Earth sign”? There are other forms of astrology (or maybe properly referred to as calculation systems) such as Heliocentric and topocentric, however, the branch of astrology I primarily study is Geocentric. That being said, in this system of astrology the moon and the sun are considered planets. Also, despite the fact that I’m separating these from the other planets, the sun and the moon are considered personal planets as well.
The Sun: This is the sign that almost everybody knows. Each planet rules a certain sign, including the luminaries. That being said, the sun rules Leo. Some planets rule more than one sign. However, the sun does not rule more than one. The sun represents the self. The sun is your ego, how we try to project ourselves outward. To some it’s even who we are and also want to be. I also see this as the core of ourselves, once you strip everything away, this is who we are at the end of the day. It’s our vitality, self-expression, creativity, and It’s our unique identity. In a birth chart, the sun can also represent our father figure or dominant parent and other significant male figures. It MOSTLY applies to the father though. If you’re a male, this could represent how you’ll be as a father. If you're a woman, it could even represent the way you express your masculine energy. The sun could represent what's passed down from your father as well.
The Moon: This planet represents your emotions, your instincts, and intuition, how you express your emotions, how you respond to emotions. It represents emotional needs, your eating patterns, the ability to nurture, how you like to be nurtured. It also represents your mother and how you will be as a mother. It also represents how you express your divine feminine, male or female. The moon could represent what's passed down from your mother as well. It could also represent what qualities you need in a mother. The moon rules Cancer.
The Personal Planets
Mercury: This planet represents the way you think, the way you understand, the way you process, the way you communicate. It could represent the way you write, how quick you learn, how you seek knowledge and why knowledge. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo.
Venus: Venus represents the way you love, your fashion style, what you perceive as beautiful, how you approach love, the type of love life you’ll have, your expectations in love, what we value in general, and our divine feminine(to a lesser effect), the way you’re beautiful, this is your sensuality and every romantic aspect of you(the moon can also represent this to a certain degree) and it can also have an effect on your creativity and artistic skill. Venus rules Taurus and Libra.
Mars: This is your physical energy, a lesser extent your divine masculine, it can represent your physical action, this explains how you get angry, why you may physically react differently than your conscience allows you too, it also represents your aggression, it represents your passion and ambition physically and mentally, and your sexual energy in a primal way. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.
The Outer Planets
Jupiter: It represents our good fortune, how we expand, the types of opportunities we’ll get in life, where we’re lucky in life, where we have interest in travel, knowledge, where we may have abundance in life even including our addictions, our creativity, how optimistic we are. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces.
Saturn: This planet represent s the way we take authority, how we look for authority and can even represent your dominating parent, father, or disciplinary parent. Our responsibility, our karma, our self-discipline, it could also represent restraints, it can also represent the shadow self,. Saturn represents Capricorn and Aquarius.
Uranus: This is a generational planet. This planet represents the way you change society and the world it’s the way you rebel and you’re rebellious energy, the way you innovate. Uranus rules Aquarius.
Neptune: This is a generational planet. It is the way we interact with our subconscious, the way we transcend, the way we dream and fantasize, the way we idealize, it can also represent our addictions as well, and escapism. This planet rules Pisces.
Pluto: This is a generational planet. This is where we want to find change and transformation, how we create change and transformation, and also the type of change that we’ll be forced to experience
The Asteroids
The asteroids aren’t like many of the outer planets, however, they also aren’t like the personal planets. Personally, I think the house the asteroid is placed and what they’re aspected with is more important than the sign there in. However, that doesn’t mean the sign doesn’t have importance! The asteroids are important but to a lesser extent than the personal planets.
Chiron: This asteroid has a particularly dark theme and you should always make sure the person you’re interpreting for is fine with you going over it. This represents our emotional wounds, scars, traumas etc. this can also represent our karma to an extent. If you ever feel like there’s an avenue in life where you just can’t win or where things always go bad, typically this can be attributed to Chiron. However because of our wounds, once we overcome Chiron we become great healers for other people concerning this life area.
Juno: This represents our partnerships, but specifically ideal marriage partnerships and long term partnerships. It has to do with the type of equality, a give-and-take that we want in a relationship.
Eros: This represents our eroticism, what we may sexually objectify, and sexually desire, and it can represent our creative passion.
Ceres: Technically dwarf planets, this is still considered an asteroid. This represents how we nurtured much like the moon and where we need to be nurtured. This is more of a family type asteroid than a relationship type. This is also good to look at how someone may treat their family or what kind of family they have or may create
Vesta: Represents your devotion, your dedication, how you dedicate and why you dedicate. It also represents how we feel towards our home and how we keep our home alive, how we contribute to our home.
Nessus: This asteroid has a particularly dark theme and you should always make sure the person you’re interpreting for is fine with you going over it. It represents where we face trauma, deception, broken trust, and it can even show how we can break these or contribute to these. Nessus Astro has connections to sex but in a more negative way.
Pallas: The way we defend ourselves, our strategy’s, our planning skills, our defense mechanisms.
Pholus: Turning points in your life, major changes, and even the catalyst that leads to that major change.

heeeey, what astrology books for beginners would you recommend?
I would recommend the ones that I currently have.
If you’re looking for a straight shot but thorough explanation of almost everything and more you should get The Astrology Bible by Judy Hall
If you’re looking for something that gives a great/proficient explanation of nearly everything but won’t overwhelm you, you should get The Secret Language of Astrology by Roy Gillett.
If you want something that gives a well-rounded explanation of almost every sign expression, while also providing great explanations you should get The Stars Within You by Juliana McCarthy.
Overall I think all three are great books to have for beginners. They give so much information and where one lacks, the others make up for. The Astrology Bible does a great job at brushing almost everything a beginner needs to know about reading their natal chart and, even includes sections on synastry, solar and lunar returns, and progressions. The Secret Language of Astrology gives a very great job at explaining things but I think it offers much more when it comes to aspects when compared to the other books. The Stars Within You does a great job at giving more than a 1 sentence explanation of how certain signs manifest under certain planets and give more straightforward myths about the signs. It also does a great job at better explaining chart patterns.

Crash Course: The Sun Signs
There are plenty of topics that I plan to post about, but then it crossed my mind that many of you may lack knowledge of the more basic information in astrology. So this prompted me to begin a series called "Crash Course' where I give you the basic information you need to know about a certain topic. Most of these topics you will be able to learn about easily outside of Orastrology and that's why It's a crash course and not an actual topic of concern. So here it is, the first in the series; the sun signs.
Aries
Fired up and ready to go, Aries is the youthful ruler of the 1st house. This sign...

Hey! What placements can make a person SEEM extremely judgemental? I feel like people see me that way when I'm really not. It gets really annoying :(
Virgo anything tbh. Virgo’s are big on everything being perfect and always usually have critiques or comments. You can actually be a really accepting person but if you have Virgo in a prominent enough placement you can have a tendency to seem judgmental.
I also think Aquarius and Capricorn placements can seem judgmental too. Aquarius is open to a lot things but they tend to have a “holier than thou” attitude because of how right and amazing they think they are. They can also be pretty blunt and that can be mistaken as being over judgmental.
Capricorn usually has everything so well put together that when they don’t see it from other people they can come off as being judgmental. It’s more the intimidation type factor with this placement. Plus it’s also pretty stuck in its ways. So if it’s something they strongly disagree with they’ll definitely come off as judgmental.
I have a Virgo Moon and with my Jupiter in the 1st house, I consistently make random comments about things and it sounds judgmental but really I just want a reason to talk or to start a conversation lmao.
