Do you have to build your crabby enclosure in a way that makes sure they'll be safe if they fall? Or is it kind of automatically safe for them to take a tumble in?

Yes and no!

Crabs are fairly durable, both them and their shells. They can repair a lot of damage with molting. And their shells protect them from a lot of major damage, provided it's the right size & thick enough. The biggest risk would be thinner walled shells like Babylonian or pearled turbos. But I think all of my crabs are in thicker shells right now.

They do sometimes just decide the easiest way to get down is Let Go & drop, even in the wild. As long as they don't hit a rock, this usually works fine.

In my tank, most things aren't gonna be hard enough to break their shell, so that's not a huge concern. But the biggest concern is one of them falling into the pools and cracking the glass. There's only so much I can do to prevent that, since I need access to the pools too, and don't want anything to mold from being directly above.

But luckily they really don't seem to fall on accident that often. They're really excellent climbers and even if they get surprised, I don't think they usually let go and fall - they might retract into their shell or climb to a hiding spot faster. But more often they let go when they're close to the substrate and only fall a couple inches.

I haven’t heard anything about Ulises. Basically every Seaworld-news bit I’ve seen recently is about them getting put on notice by the SEC. I’ll keep an eye out.

Yknow, wildlife aid always rubbed me the wrong way. It started when the rehab I was with gushed about them (right along with seaworld), and this rehab isnt known for it's good judgment. Anything they supported I pretty much learned to steer clear of. Even so, I hadnt seen any actual reason to dislike them. But now? Now that they publicly, in writing, admitted they care so little about native wildlife that they would WANT to release invasives? Hard pass.

YEP. Not gonna support any wildlife rescue that’s going to ignore conservation and environmental issues so blatantly for their own agenda. I knew I’d seen the issue they had with pigeonblr, but didn’t see how far that had gone (I got a message from someone about it). That plus this.... Yikes. No thanks.

That’s pretty much how I felt when I first watched HLVRAI. I was like “There is absolutely no way that this is the same dude everyone keeps drawing.” One of the things that practically everyone draws him with his like a one eye and a shadow on his face even though that it isn’t present on his actual character model.
