I finished my last assignment for this intro to modeling course today. They wanted to teach us some of the basics of organic modeling, so it's still fairly simple, but I'm pretty pleased with how it came out!

The models are modeling
A mix of Maya and Zbrush to create a model which was then carved on a CNC router.
Self Portrait. Hair and maybe rigging later.
Organic & Hard Surface Modelling Research
17/01/20
The title I was given was “A railway carriage of refugees from an art nouveau mountain town” I went to the V&A museum to do some research on the Art Nouveau style and to look for some physical objects that had those kinds of design elements. I found the most inspiration from the broaches and other sorts of jewelry on display. After spending some time looking through various artifacts and furniture, I decided to design a lantern and a carriage as my two objects. The carriage would be the hard surface object resembling the most iconic idea of what a carriage looks like, and the lantern would be more organic. It would be made up of things like leaves or flowers, with vines and other patterns found in nature. I struggled to find a way to differentiate the hard surface from organic while maintaining the art nouveau style. In the end, the carriage would be an object that is more representative of a traditional carriage with carvings in the body to achieve the desired style but maintain the hard surface feel. On the other hand, the lantern would be made up of forms from nature and therefore be assumed to operate with some kind of magic.

Organic modeling has created new ways to work with surfaces that were simply impossible before. Click on this video to learn more.
I’ve been exploring organic modeling in Maya. The process is not much different than Cinema4D but it was still a good exercise.
