Songs of 2019
April 30, 2019
In honor of April showers bringing May flowers, we're going to talk about rain today. More specifically:
The Rain Song by Led Zeppelin.
Sometimes I think Led Zeppelin is the band of my soul. And I'm not being dramatic when I say that. I have a tendency to stumble across their art--because I’m not really an active seeker of music; I like for it to happen to me, if that makes any sense--and for that music to fill a void or give me an answer. Ramble On was like that. So was The Rain Song.
The Rain Song feels like a soothing balm to my heart. It is a calming presence that makes me remember how to breathe when my chest feels too tight, the kind of song that does genuinely sound like the gentle falling of a light rain in the spring. It is soft and quiet and loving--and it allows itself to be whatever you need it to be. It is there for a good cry, there for those moments when you’re drifting into sleep with eyes too heavy to keep open any longer, there for the simple happiness that you find when you reach contentment. It feels like peace, like spring, like time moving forward exactly the way that it is supposed to.
And technically speaking, this song is gorgeous. There are some beautiful moments of piano accents/melodies that are literally like candy for your ears. The guitar melody that carries the song it what conveys all of the feelings I mentioned before. Obviously, the vocals on every Led Zeppelin song are stellar, and it is the same for The Rain Song.
Led Zeppelin is one of the bands that changed the course of music. Nothing we have today would be what it is without them. They were wonderful, and it is no surprise that they’ve gone down as one of the greatest bands in history. They have stylistic range, and their sound is near perfection. So if you haven’t let Led Zeppelin into your life and your playlists, now would be a perfect time to begin.
