Before Sarah and Poppy had been born, Elliot and Alastor had not been quite friends but too close to be called acquaintances. Then Sarah had been born, and Alastor's wife had left in the middle of the night with a man from France; there had been no note, no explanation for why she had left with another man. She had just up and left Alastor with a newborn babe that he had no idea how to look after.
Then Elliot's wife became pregnant, and shortly afterwards, there were complications during her pregnancy. After she had given birth to Poppy, she died not even an hour later.
Alastor and Elliot bonded over being single fathers and the challenges that it brought, at some point tthe pair of them grew closer, and Poppy would often follow Sarah around like a shadow, not that the older girl had minded. She had enjoyed having a younger sister, even if they were not related by blood.
It was no secret that Alastor and Elliot were a couple, or rather, that was what everyone thought they were; there were no romantic feelings on Alastor's side. He enjoyed having a friend who understood his struggles and enjoyed having someone whom he could confide in. Elliot, on the other hand?
Did have romantic feelings for Alastor.
They were raising two daughters together. Alastor was there when others were. Alastor understood Elliot in ways that no one else did. So how could he not love Alastor?
Then Alastor ended up getting shot through the head, mistaken for a deer, and then not even two years after that?
Sarah had been found tortured and murdered in the same place that Alastor had been killed in. Shortly after that?
Poppy got sick.
Elliot's life was crumbling around him, and he knew that he had to do something; he still had the bodies of Alastor and Sarah, and he had preserved them as best as he could.
Then Poppy died.
Elliot began his research into bringing back the dead; he knew that he could do it; he just needed to figure out how. Then he found Olvier, badly beaten on the verge of death, and he knew that he had found his first test subject, and thus the Prototype was born. He told the Prototype about how he was going to give him a family, he told him about Alastor, Sarah and Poppy and how they would be so happy to meet him.
That he just needed a little more time, and they would all be together.
Then, Leith had him killed shortly after he had finished creating the bodies for Alastor and Sarah; however, Elliot had been able to bring Poppy back to life. But the Prototype never forgets Elliot's words.
Family.
Somewhere out there, there was a mother and a sister that none of them, save Poppy, had ever met. Poppy had been more than happy to tell the other toys about Alastor and Sarah, and tell them all about the adventures that they had gotten up to. The secret hideout she and Sarah had, or the homemade meals tha Alastor would make for them, or how Alastor would nag at her father when he did too much work and refused to take a break.

Then the bodies of Alastor and Sarah were discovered, as well as the toy bodies that Elliot had created for them.
