Basic Plot: A new mother, bound to the hospital to deliver, is plagued by thought of her deceased mother and all the shortcomings faced that she is now scared to replicate. 

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️

Readability: 2/5

Plot Interest: 1/5

Creativity: 3/5

I found this to be too unrelatable to really enjoy it. The writing is done well enough but I personally found the second person perspective combined with the choppy nature in the sentencing structure to come across as too curt and wound up working against one another. I couldn’t sink into the “characters” mindset at all with this combined with the topic itself. I didn’t find anything particularly alluring about this short story. 

I only gave it a 2 out of 5 for these reasons listed above but I think someone who could relate more to this character’s back story would find it to be more enticing. Generally, I try to not demote based on relatability considering it is subjective, but in this case the writing style also exacerbated this issue simultaneously making this a very “love it or hate it” work. I can see it’s potential but I found it to be boring due to the lack of connection although I do hope others can experience this in maybe a more personal light and enjoy this work for what it is trying to do.

JULIE ORRINGER: He is actually quite a dark poet. "From the time when one is sick to death,/ one is alone, and he dies more alone." TOBIAS WOLFF: Oh, god, he sure is. He's a tough poet. And complicated. Not overcomplicated or perversely complicated, but he is complicated. And yet there is that face of his work which is deceptive, and can allow you to read him simplistically, and that is a great mistake.

A book review (of Until the Dawn's Light, by Aharon Appelfeld) by Orringer for the Sunday NYTimes made me squeal in delight while I drank my coffee. There are so many new books that I want to read. I've never read anything by Appelfeld, by Orringer's review makes me want to pick this book up.
