Books I’ve Read in 2018 #6 Oryx & Crake by Margaret Atwood. I knew very little about this novel when I started so had no clue as to what to expect. Still, I was surprised. Oryx & Crake is a slow exploration of the end of the world at the hands of corporate genetic experimentation all in the name of the greater good, and I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. Atwood paints a vivid and, at times, way too feasible image of the future. I struggled at first with Atwood’s narrative structure and found the world building intriguing, if slightly tedious, yet this works wonderfully to sink it’s hooks into you so gently you don’t realise it’s happened until you’re spending an hour and a half sunk to your neck in a cold bath, twisting through chapters without realising it... #booksivereadin2018 #oryxandcrake #maddaddam #margaretatwood #pigoon #minimonotonebookclub #houlart #houl

BOOK REVIEW Oryx & Crake - Margaret Atwood - 🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is a typical Atwood, brilliant bordering on absurd and written in such an intriguing way that it will stay with you forever. But what is this book about?? Jeez, that’s a loaded question if ever I heard on. I guess it’s about Jimmy aka Snowman, growing up in a futuristic and lost apocalyptic world. It’s about his friendship with Crake and his love for Oryx. Ultimately it’s a vision of a terrifying and fascinating future that’s just close enough to reality to be disturbing. I’ve been a huge fan of Margaret Atwood’s work ever since year ten when I read the Handmaids Tale for the first time. I’ve read it three times since across my Bachelors degree and I’ve also read Alias Grace which I really loved. I got this at the Bookfest last year and decided it’s next after I finish Charming and Gems of Elsana. One of my favorite books of all time, “Oryx and Crake” by Margaret Atwood. 📚🌿 I know the irony if explaining this novel, on an app on my iPhone... believe me. A large part of Oryx and Crake is centered on mankind’s dependency on technology and innovation. Atwood uses this novel to question whether our race is moving closer to extinction with our obsession with “moving forward”. Can our innovations become our demise? Are we a species that chooses to solely manipulate it’s surroundings rather than adapting and coexisting with it? Can we advance as a society in ways that do not include technological innovations that harm our surroundings? I’d love to hear your thoughts, and if you’ve read this book!
