The Ossaert is a boogeyman from Dutch folklore. A water monster, it was once a dog owned by a notoriously cruel man. When both died, they remained in the town of Kloosterzande in the province of Zeeland, where the fiery-eyed form of the Ossaert became widely feared.

The Ossaert is also said to appear as a rabbit, a horse, a donkey, a bull and a blue light. It is often depicted dragging heavy chains, and will leap onto people to force them to their knees until dawn. It also drowns drunks.
