Calum turns in front of the mirror again. He’s been checking his reflection for the past half an hour, trying and failing to form a decision on whether or not he wanted to stay in the kilt or change back into the wide grey trousers that, for now, are discarded on the couch next to him.

The trousers would be safe, is the thing. He’s worn them on stage before, two years ago when performing was still a regular occurance, and he wears them regularly at home. He knows they’d most likely be welcomed back by their fans, especially combined with the mesh shirt.

The kilt is new, but the kilt is also, in almost every sense except for actual definition, a skirt. He remembers that it was easier to make the decision years ago when they were touring and decided to all wear kilts on stage one evening. Those had been plaid, looked more traditional and the boys were wearing them too. Now it’s just him, and the kilt is black, making it look even more like a normal skirt.

He doesn’t quite know if he’s ready for this. He wants to be, wants to wear the skirt because he likes how he looks in it. He likes the way it makes him feel and he likes how it makes his boyfriends react to him. Calum loves how Ashton will make lewd comments whenever he wears it around the house, and he loves wearing it so he can match Michael and his plaid skirt, and he loves that every time he wears this skirt or one of the other two he’s acquired of the past year Luke can’t take his eyes off him.

He’s never really worn it in public though. At parties, yes, with their friends, and at that one bar Roy took him to, but never anywhere he’d be seen by the general public and now he’s nervous.

He takes another look at the way the skirt swirls around his legs, showing off his calves (one of Michael’s favourite things to point out) and how nice it fits with the mesh shirt and docs. He likes the goth edge it gives him with his freshly cut hair working as a perfect accessory. The chains on the skirt and the buttons which make it more clear that this actually is a kilt and not a traditional skirt are details he loves too and he wants to show them off. There’s that nagging voice at the back of his head telling him that people will make comments though.

Calum’s aware of the social stigma and the stereotypes. He knows all about how gender is still a binary that cuts everything in half for most people, be it toys or clothes; that he, personally, doesn’t give a flying fuck about those is not the norm. Though there’s also the thought that most of their fans are young, their age or even younger, and open to change, open to different gender expressions. But the thought of all the negative things he’s seen written about men who dress the way he is right now, clad in a piece of fabric that screams femininity and has been judged lesser for it, is frightening. He doesn’t agree in the slightest, with any of it. He has always liked wearing makeup and he loves wearing the skirts, and he’s never felt less like who he is for it. He doesn’t understand how being more feminine by social standards has to be a negative thing. Just because he doesn’t understand the reasoning though, doesn’t mean he can easily ignore it. The voice at the back of his head keeps reminding him and fear has settled in his stomach.

He’s lost in thought, fiddling with the hem of his shirt, when the door to the changing room opens and Luke walks back in. The other guys had left to get more drinks and socialise with some friends they brought along but Calum had preferred to stay behind. In the mirror he can see Luke fumbling to get the door closed one handed, the other holding two bottles of water.

“Do you need help?” Even though laughing is not exactly a priority Calum has right now, it’s still hard not to when Luke keeps moving like a newborn giraffe.

“No, no, I got it.” Miraculously, he really does manage to close the door and then he’s on his way to Calum, smiling so bright it’s enough to illuminate the room.

“Got you a drink,” Luke says, holding one of the water bottles out for Calum to take and putting the other on one of the dressers. “Can’t have our bassist be dehydrated on stage.”

When Calum takes the bottle from him, Luke moves behind him, so Calum’s back is pressed against his front, and clasps his arms around his middle, his chin resting on Calum’s shoulder so he can look at them in the mirror.

“You look so good, Cal.”

Luke’s one to talk. He’s always gorgeous with his pixie nose and bright eyes but today he’s even more breathtaking than usual. The suit brings out the baby blue of his eyes, even more accentuated by his makeup, and his curls fall so perfectly it looks barely real. And that wonder of a person is staring at Calum through the reflection of a mirror and is telling him that he’s the one that looks good. There was really no chance Calum wouldn’t blush.

“Do you really think so?” He hates how small his voice sounds even to himself.

Luke’s eyebrows draw together, small creases of worry taking over his face and his arms tightening around Calum.

“Of course, I do. What’s wrong, sweetheart?”

Calum’s arms have come to rest tangled around Luke’s and now, instead of pulling on his own shirt, he starts playing with one of Luke’s sleeves, a desperate need to keep his hands busy overtaking. “What if they don’t like it?”

He can see Luke understanding immediately. It’s visible in his eyes, worry being replaced by sympathy.

“They will. The ones who don’t, we don’t need around anyway. Honey, remember how happy all the fans react whenever one of us wears makeup. A skirt will probably cause even more joy.” Luke presses a quick kiss against Calum’s cheek before he continues. “If you really don’t feel comfortable wearing the skirt on stage we’re not gonna make you. That’s the whole point, love, it’s about you being comfortable. You should get to feel pretty and good about yourself, and if that’s in a skirt than everybody else will have to get over their stupid attachments to gender roles for clothing, and if it’s not in a skirt than that’s okay too.”

Calum doesn’t quite know what to say so he settles on, “I love you.” Somehow Luke’s arms tighten around him even more and then he’s nudging against Calum’s chin so he’ll look up into the mirror again.

“I love you too,” Luke’s voice is all soft and Calum’s never loved anyone more (well, except for two exceptions), “and I think you look incredible in this skirt. I also think you look incredible in your trousers though.”

Calum takes a deep breath and looks over his outfit again before finding Luke’s eyes in the mirror once more, “You really think there won’t be too much backlash?”

“They’ll love it. As much as we do.” Luke’s face is open and earnest and Calum is so in love.

“Okay,” another deep breath. “Shirt tucked in or not?”

They’re still discussing that choice, now with Luke sitting on the couch looking up at Calum changing small parts of his outfit, when the door opens again and Ashton and Michael walk in.

“We’re on in a couple of minutes, thought we should let you know and come get you before you don’t find the way to the stage.” Michael says while closing the door behind him.

“That was one time and it was just because you guys didn’t wait for me!” It’s comical how quickly Luke turns indignant and defensive over a joke they’d made a hundred times before and will make again, nevermind how much he argues.

Calum had been so busy laughing at Luke’s tone that he didn’t notice Ashton approaching him right up to the point where Ashton’s arms wrap around his waist and the drummer is picking him up. Calum’s automatically grabbing onto Ashton’s shoulders and squeals when Ashton twirls him around once before setting him back down but keeping his arms around him.

“You look so pretty, Cal.” Ashton’s smile is right in front of him and he’d just been subjected to another ridiculous show of strength from him, so Calum really can’t be blamed that the only answer he’s capable of is kissing Ashton.

“Hey, I didn’t get a kiss.”

Calum pulls away and is greeted by Luke standing behind Ashton now, small pout on his face.

He just laughs once and then pecks Ashton’s lips again before moving over to Luke and pulling him into a kiss as well.

Ashton interrupts them after what feels like just a second to Calum, “As lovely as it is to watch you guys make out, we have a gig in like 5 minutes so we need to get going.”

“Sure, dad.” Luke pulls away and then does the sensible thing and runs out of the room before Ashton has a chance to reach him, even if there’s no doubt in Calum’s mind Ash will succeed in chasing Luke down before he reaches the stage.

“C’mon,” Michael’s holding out his hand. “Let’s follow our menaces.” Calum reaches out to intertwine their hands and when he does Michael pulls them up to press a kiss against the back of his hand. “You look wonderful and the fans will go mad for it, babe.”

Maybe it’s because they’ve known each other for most of their life, but it still amazes Calum how easily Michael can read him and how well he knows how to calm him down.

He follows the easy pull of Michael’s hand through the backstage area and everything’s alright, he’s looking pretty, his boyfriends love him and he finally gets to be on a stage again.

Afterwards, if he’s lucky, he’ll steal Michael’s jacket, hide himself in the too long sleeves and breathe in the comforting smell of Michael, that’s really just home. They’ll go out for a bit and talk about the show and Ashton will use any chance he gets to praise his boys. When they get home Calum will help Luke remove his makeup because it’s inevitable that Luke will whine and beg to not have to do it himself. There’s gonna be laughter and love and cuddles and Calum can’t wait for it.

But for now he’s going to play a show in a skirt and he’s going to have the time of his life with his loves.

“Hey,” Calum says, sliding into the chair across from Michael at the kitchen table. Michael looks up from his book and smiles.

“Hey.”

“Any idea what we’re doing for dinner?” Calum asks. “Luke doesn’t know and Ashton doesn’t care.”

“Pizza,” Michael says immediately. “Please? Pizza, please? Movie night with pizza? Did I mention pizza?” 

“I’m in,” Calum says. He smiles a little. “I was kinda hoping you’d say that, actually.”

“You know me,” Michael says cheekily, offering up his face. Calum, struggling to lean across the table, kisses his cheek. “I’ll order.”

“I was hoping you’d say that, too,” Calum says, reaching up to brush Michael’s cheek with the back of his fingers. “You’re the best.”

“I am,” Michael agrees solemnly. “The best. I agree. Well said.”

“Although Luke did let me play Oasis the whole drive home from work today,” Calum says thoughtfully.

Michael pulls a face. “Hey! If I worked with you, I’d let you play Oasis on the drive home.”

“Yeah, but you don’t.”

“Yes, but it’s the thought.”

“For Luke it was the action,” Calum says. “I don’t know, Mikey. You might have to battle Luke for top spot.”

Michael doesn’t really have a comeback for this. Frankly, most of the time he also thinks Luke is the best. He’s pretty evenly divided, actually, thinking his three boys are the best. 

“We can share,” says Michael. “Luke is small.”

Calum laughs. “I’d feel bad leaving out Ashton.”

“Ah, he’s a big boy. He can take it.”

“Boyfriend of the year, you are.”

“I’m ordering the pizza, aren’t I?” Michael holds up his phone like evidence, even though the screen is still dark. The real reason he’s the one ordering is because he’s the only person with the number of the pizza place saved to his contacts. According to Luke, this is “on brand” for him. If that means Michael’s brand is having access to pizza delivery anywhere, then he’s absolutely okay with that.

“I’ll have to run the numbers again,” Calum says lightly. He pushes his chair out. “I’m gonna go shower.”

“Please do.”

“Hey!”

“Joking, love you,” Michael says quickly, offering Calum a smile. Calum narrows his eyes, but after a moment he shrugs it off.

“Okay. Love you too.”

He sweeps past Michael through to the bathroom, and Michael unlocks his phone to scroll through his contacts.

The doorbell rings. 

“Dinner!” Michael shouts. He makes for the front door and pulls it open. “Hey. Thanks so much. Have a good night.”

“You too,” says the delivery guy, already turning away to return to his car and probably deliver more pizzas. That, Michael thinks, is his dream job. Driving around for hours, transporting pizza from hot ovens to eager hands and hosting one-man-concerts in his car. Not to mention that working for a pizza place must come with pizza-related perks. Free pizza, for example. Not for the first time, Michael wonders if their pizza place is seeking drivers. Also not for the first time, he pushes the thought aside.

“Dinner!” Ashton hollers, sliding into the living room on his socks. He’s shirtless in joggers for no reason Michael can identify. Sometimes Ashton is just like that. None of them are complaining, because, well. Obviously. “I love dinner!”

“Someone say dinner?” Calum appears in the room. “I love dinner.”

“Fuck’s sake, just get married already,” Michael says, rolling his eyes.

Ashton giggles and turns to Calum. “Same brain.”

“We are the wisest,” Calum says, nodding like this is an established fact. A careening force rams into him at full speed and he staggers forward, barely catching himself. “Motherfucker, Luke.”

“I heard talk of pizza,” Luke says, tucking his chin over Calum’s shoulder and hugging Calum from behind. “I’m starving. Gimme gimme.”

“We’re all starving. No hogging the pizza,” Calum informs him, angling his head to lean back onto Luke’s shoulder. They’re cute, Michael thinks. Maybe Luke should be best boyfriend for today. Or maybe Calum, if Michael’s honest. Everyone seems to generally concur that something about Calum today is extremely distracting.

The smell of pizza, however, is equally distracting. Possibly more so. Another day, Michael may need to reexamine his priorities.

“We all know Mikey’s gonna hog the pizza,” Luke grumbles.

“That’s okay, I got two,” Michael says. “One for me, one for the rest of you.”

Ashton takes the pizza out of Michael’s hands. “Sharing is caring, you arse.” 

“I did this for you!”

“Is this pepperoni?” Ashton sniffs the air. “Definitely yes.”

“Other one’s half cheese, half veggie,” Michael says, taking the box of pepperoni back but leaving the other box in Ashton’s arms. “Luke, you and I are on this one.”

“Fuck yes,” Luke says fervently. “You read my fucking mind.”

Like Michael hasn’t ordered pizza for them all dozens of times. He knows the general preferences.

Case in point: “You got veggie?” Ashton says, prying open the box. “Hey, Mikey, have I told you I love you today?”

“You have not,” Michael says, even though he probably has. “So let’s hear it.”

“Hold on a sec,” Ashton says, stepping over discarded shoes and someone’s jumper — probably Michael’s — to set the pizza down on the coffee table. Immediately, Calum makes a beeline for the box, leaping over the back of the couch and reaching to open it before he’s fully settled. Michael grins at the move before Ashton reappears in front of him, redirecting his attention.

“Well,” Ashton says seriously, putting both hands on Michael’s shoulders, “there’s something I have to tell you.”

Michael stifles a laugh. “Yeah, go on.”

“Don’t freak out,” Ashton says, “but I think I’m in love with you.”

“Fuck,” Michael says. “Ashton, I don’t know what to say. This is kind of awkward. I don’t actually feel the same.”

Ashton’s jaw drops in mock-offence. “What the fuck? I thought we had something.”

“We did, we did! But you eat veggie pizza, and I’m more of a pepperoni kind of guy, so…”

“Wow,” Ashton says, appalled. “So this is how it ends.”

Michael smirks. “Guess so,” he says, and tugs Ashton into a kiss. It’s laughable how quickly Ashton relents, melting into it like ice cream on a sunny day, sweet by all standards. When Michael pulls back he grins. “Kidding, by the way. I love you too.” 

“You’re on thin ice,” Ashton says, very unconvincingly, considering he’s smiling like a kid on Christmas. “Thin ice, Clifford.”

“I got you veggie pizza.”

“I can’t believe I’m dating a guy who doesn’t like vegetables,” Ashton says, shaking his head.

Michael scoffs. “I’m dating two vegetarians! Imagine how I feel.”

“You’re welcome,” Luke, the other resident carnivore, chimes in from his position on the sofa.

“Objectively, one of these things is worse than the other,” Calum points out as Ashton and Michael traipse over to the couch. “At least we eat healthy.”

“I respect your dietary choices,” Michael says. “Respect mine.” He wedges himself between Luke and Calum and Ashton takes a seat at Calum’s left. The TV is already on, set to play a DVD of their choosing, although it seems to have been abandoned for the moment in favour of pizza. Calum is happily munching away at a cheesy slice, Luke on one with pepperoni.

“What are we watching?” Ashton asks, reaching over Calum to pull a slice of veggie out of the pizza. It’d be civil to eat with plates, but the four of them are well past civil. 

“Whose turn is it to choose?” Calum asks. He’s already almost done with his slice. That boy can fucking eat. Not one to be outdone, Michael takes a big bite out of his own slice. 

“Oh my God,” he manages through his mouthful. “Oh my fucking God, I love pizza. This was such a good idea.”

“Agreed,” Luke says, hooking his foot around Michael’s ankle and briefly leaning into him. Michael hums as a feeling of bliss settles like a blanket cape over his shoulders, a gentle hug of happiness. This is the life. Four boys crammed shoulder-to-shoulder on one couch, not because there’s not enough room but because to be anything short of pressed together would leave too much space between any of them. God, Michael loves his life. Weird boyfriends and diverse pizza tastes and uncivil eating habits and all. He wouldn’t want it any other way with anyone else.

A minor argument between Ashton and Luke resolves into the decision that Luke will pick the movie, which of course means they’re watching High School Musical 3, though Michael can’t complain. Everyone knows the third movie is the best. Also, Michael suspects Luke just doesn’t want to pick a movie everyone will groan at. Ever the peacekeeper, that one.

As Luke goes to put the movie in and Ashton rises to grab a shirt from his room, Calum leans against Michael’s other side, reaching for his face and then pulling back at the last second.

“Greasy fingers,” he says apologetically. 

“The true homewrecker,” Michael deadpans. “Grease.”

“Hey, I like Grease.”

“Oh, shut up.”

Calum smiles, and Michael struggles to come up with a single thing more beautiful in the world. “Thanks for getting us pizza. I love you.” 

Michael quirks his lips. “That’s a bit cheesy.”

Calum rolls his eyes with impressive force. “Seriously? I’m being cute.”

“And I’m being hilarious,” Michael returns. He captures Calum’s mouth with his own, delighted to find that he can taste the faintest trace of Calum’s last slice on his lips. Calum hums softly until Michael pulls away. 

“One day you won’t be able to kiss your bad jokes better,” he says. He, too, is smiling. Michael doesn’t think that day will come anytime soon. 

“Whatever you say,” he says airily, licking his lips. “But until then, just know…you’ll always have a pizza my heart.”

Calum stares at him as Michael’s grin slowly spreads until he’s cackling, pulling a squirming Calum into his arms and saying “Get it? A pizza my heart?” over all of Calum’s futile protests.

maggie i never thought i would get my blog back but here we are!!! i was so obsessed with this for ot4 i wrote and posted on ao3 but!! we will post here also now i’ve returned!!! 💖💖💖

That’s the thing about the four of them, they say they can’t really pinpoint exactly how it happened. How it became the four of them in every single iteration of the words, wrapped and tied together securely, looping in and out and around them all. The way they fell together reflected the way they started in the first place, jumbled and messy, knotted like unorganised wires in a drawer, and it went a little something like this.

Calum and Michael were first. Best friends for as long as they could remember, it was only natural that they were each other’s first everything, sneaking kisses to “practice” when they were thirteen years old, sloppy and messy, giggling and avoiding each other’s eyes afterwards, only to immediately come back together. The subsequent sexuality crisis to come for both, pulled out of it by the other with a firm grip and returns of whispered “you’re okay I’m your best friend I’m not going anywhere” echoed between them both under the covers on wobbly nights, tilted and hazy with worry. Michael had been first, slightly more assured of his own self and older in most ways, but Calum had followed not too far behind, as was the case in pretty much all their experiences.

Over the years fumbling kisses turned to more, clumsy and hurried in their rooms at sleepovers; muffling themselves on each other's lips as they learnt themselves and each other, the feeling of safety and support that only the other could bring. And that was that. They were best friends, more than friends, more than boyfriends, more than lovers. But also none of that. Just Michael and Calum. And whenever they strayed with other people, they always found themselves back together, like a piece of elastic wrapped around their wrists, stretching and pulling away only to snap back together as soon as the strain got too much, yanked towards each other to find comfort and solace.

Luke came along a bit later as with the band. Calum reached out to him when he was alone and friendless, sharing kind words in music class and giving him smiles freely which took him off guard when in the rest of his life he felt like he’d always had to pay for kindness, to be expected to give something in return. He antagonised Michael at first with his closeness to Calum, the way he connected with him was something Michael had only seen Calum have with himself before and he felt jealous towards the other boy as a only a fifteen year old can. He felt as if Luke was going to rip Calum away from him for himself, tie the two of them together with his own string and leave Michael out of it, untethered and floating. But Luke didn’t pull, he came towards them, looped them both into his friendship with his shy smile and soft voice and then it was the three of them like it never hadn’t been.

It happened between Luke and Calum next. Luke knew that Michael and Calum were something more than platonic, but then he always felt that they were all something a little bit more than platonic, a feeling running deeper even if it hadn’t resulted in a physical act. Calum and Luke spent most of the first two years of their touring out every night, drinking and living the biggest possible lives they could, dragging whoever back to their bedrooms when they felt like it. It was one night when a drunken thought of “wouldn’t it be easier if we just kissed each other” that neither of them can remember who suggested, which led to Calum and Luke, Luke on his knees in a club bathroom and then a night spent in their hotel room which fortunately the two of them were already sharing.

It had gotten a little bit messy then, the string tangling with Michael’s elastic, the lines impossible to follow as they snarled and caught each other. Michael trying to pull himself away when he found out, the jealousy bubbling up inside him like the first time Luke came into their lives, hot and unpleasant and threatening to boil over. One night when the tension had almost gotten too much for them all, when Michael had closed his bunk curtain to hide away from the world, Luke stormed through the bus, ripping open the curtain and landing his lips on Michael’s. Michael made a soft noise of surprise and froze for a second, before slowly kissing Luke back, and Luke smiled into Michael’s mouth and all of a sudden it was Luke and Michael. The years of the two of them touching whenever possible, of Luke putting himself into Michael’s lap and Michael lying on him at any opportunity finally coming to a head. And it made sense again, untangled and smoothed out into a carefully interlinked braid. Michael and Calum. Calum and Luke. Luke and Michael. And around again.

Ashton was last, technically, although he had always actually been there, a link so tiny but strong nonetheless. A moment of a kind word to help a fumbling Luke in the face of his bullies being a moment that Luke never had forgotten, the only other moment apart from Calum’s offer of friendship that had truly stayed in his mind that reminded him that people were good. A moment at a party like any other where he’d bumped into Michael and they’d only spoken briefly, but enough to keep the loud and excited boy with the long fringe on his mind, long after the beer he’d spilt on Ashton had been washed away. He’d been pulled into the band with no look back or confusion, like he’d always been there, from the moment Calum got down on one knee and proposed his part in it all.

And maybe it was unexpected for Ashton to be part of whatever it was that went on between the three of them. But also it wasn’t, because he’d been there the whole time. He’d linked himself to Calum when they went to Hawaii together, days hiking and exploring melting away into lazy kisses over room service that took them both by surprise but not really at all, the two of them becoming Calum and Ashton, entangled on an impulse vacation being the only thing that made sense. With Michael it was another thing entirely, Ashton wrapping around the other man in moments to protect him from the whirlwind that they were growing up in, diverting attention from questions that Michael didn’t have it in him to answer, and the understanding that the two of them were so opposite but also the perfect reflection of each other. A kiss turning into more after long days of interviews cemented Michael and Ashton. Luke moving in with Ashton when everything had gotten too much turned out to be the final missing loop, the two of them rebuilding themselves, winding around each other to haul themselves above the deep and dark swirling water they’d found themselves in, to stop themselves from drowning. Nights spent sharing the same bed meaning they were just a little bit more Ashton and Luke than what they were before.

And so then it was. A tour and a discussion of hotel rooms of sharing what with who. A small suggestion from Luke that maybe they went back to sharing a room even though they were mid twenties and at least twenty-five percent larger than they had been when they used to do it. A cough from Calum, and a comment from Michael that Ash didn’t have to stay with them if he didn’t want to, he could go elsewhere. “I’m right where I belong I think.” He had said after a moment. And then it was, the tie complete, the ribbon that had been fluttering slightly, loose and unattached in uncertainty, had been tied into place and woven securely. Michael, Calum, Luke, Ashton. And around again.
