Hi! I was just prescribed an ear solution for my dog's infection called zymox and it's been working well so far but I was wondering if you all were familiar with it and the no pre clean application. I'm following the directions on it from the vet but from what I've seen of other ear solutions it's the only one that doesn't need the ear cleaned before using.

Yes, Zymox is legit and it is normal to not clean before application. You just let it do its thing. Interesting thing about Zymox is that it actually has some really good anti-biofilm properties, so it can be really helpful as an adjunctive treatment for those tricky pseudomonas infections that are a pain to get rid of.

hey, what kind of care is given to dogs with ear infections? I know you cant do medical assessments online, but my mother refuses to bring our dog to a vet about her chronic outer ear infections (lab) because the vet will just 'tell her to clean it with a qtip', and I was wondering what the different types of treatment a vet would prescribe are, just so I can use them to convince her its worth a visit?

The current recommendation for treatment of ear infections is a combination of daily cleaning with a medicated cleaner and daily medications. There are also leave-in meds for animals that absolutely won't allow daily medicating but dermatologists still recommend daily cleaning over a leave-in product. The specific medication required depends on the kind of infection. It's also important to know that chronic ear infections have an underlying cause that's causing the recurrence.

What are the signs a dog has an ear infection?

Flicking the ear, carrying one side lower than the other, scratching at the ear or shaking the head are all common signs of an ear infection or a foreign body in the ear.

If you look at the inside if the ear, the hairless side, the skin is normally smooth and pale pink. If it’s redder than your natural fingernail color, that is suspicious of an infection (but sometimes the whole dog goes extra pink, for example in an allergic response). If the skin is roughened or has a cobblestone appearance, that suggests an infection has been present for weeks.

Sometimes there will be a visible discharge in the ear canal, which ranges from yellow-gray to rusty-black. The appearance of this discharge does not tell you what sort of infection it is though, for that you need a smear examined under the microscope to confirm.
