↳ A CLOSER LOOK:
Katie Evans was a natural born athlete. She tried absolutely everything growing up. Soccer, track, basketball, football. Her parents had to fight for her to play that last one. The one she was most passionate about was swimming, though. She could spend hours in the pool. If it were possible, she would probably stay in the water for days. Her father started referring to her as his little mermaid, which she loved as a kid and only pretends to hate as an adult. Being a daddy’s girl, she could never actually hate the nickname. In fact, she was sure everyone knew how much she loved it. She was just in denial.
Throughout high school, Katie played the same sports she did as a kid. As long as it wasn’t swimming season, she would try anything to distract herself. She always enjoyed whatever she was doing, but once it was time to swim again, that was her first priority. Her school’s team were far from champions before she came along, and even then they weren’t the best. She’d like to think she could carry them on her own, but that was far from the truth. That didn’t stop her from trying, though. Katie had dreams of being an Olympian. That wasn’t gonna happen if she couldn’t impress some college scouts. Lucky for her, she was still good enough to get the attention of a few schools. When her first choice, UCLA, offered her a full ride; she didn’t think twice about accepting it.
Her college plans were very simple. Leave for California and never look back. Her first time at a beach was like something out of a dream. When she was supposed to be looking at dorms, she was actually swimming in the ocean. Just like when she was a kid in the pool, she had to eventually force herself out of the water and do what she went there for. She settled into her new college life in no time, though she was more focused on the team than actually choosing a major. She eventually settled on criminal justice, giving in to her parents lectures about needing a backup. She never took it seriously, though. She already knew what she wanted to do with her life and that was swim. There was no second or third choice, just her only choice. Now she didn’t have many options at all and it was her fault.
It was one party. One stupid night out that changed everything for her. It was the beginning of her junior year and some of the girls on the team invited her to a party. Not being one to turn down a good time, she accepted. She didn’t remember much from that night, and what she did remember was kind of blurry. She remembered showing up, she remembered being the designated driver, and she remembered being ditched by her so called friends. At some point, she must have begun drinking. She doesn’t know when, but considering there was alcohol in her system when she crashed her car, she knew that it was true. She couldn’t recall what she was thinking that night. It wasn’t her first time drinking like that; just the first time she was so irresponsible. She could have really hurt someone. Well, she did, but someone else.
When the doctors told her that she might never swim again, she was in complete denial. Swimming was her entire life, she wasn’t going to let one mistake at a party ruin everything she had worked for. Unfortunately for her, the damage had already been done. Her shoulder was badly injured and never healed back fully. She was removed from the team, losing her scholarship in the process. As hard as she tried to get back into it, she knew that she wasn’t swimming like she was before. Not only was she slower, she was also getting tired much quicker than before. Her body could only handle so much after the accident. Eventually, she had to face reality and come back home. Feeling ashamed, she lied to her parents about the nature of her accident. As far as they were concerned, she ran her car into a tree. Although that had been the truth, they believed she was sober when it happened. She couldn’t bring herself to tell them otherwise.
Being back at home wasn’t so bad. She missed her family and loved being with them again, but that was the only upside to it. She spent most of her time being pissed off at the world. People she was close to before, she would push them away or act coldly towards them. It was unfair that they had to deal with her attitude when she was really mad at herself. Being a lifeguard was never what she wanted to do, it was just the only way she could be near the water now. If she ever stopped being angry, she might be able to move on and find a new dream. That just hasn’t happened, yet. With the way she acted, it wasn’t clear if it ever actually will.

littlemermaidkatie replied to your post “HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOT STUFF!! This is the part where I usually offer...”
Threesome? Hot. I'd totally take you up on that, but that could make things weird. I did go to the party. I was the drunk blonde who could barely keep herself covered up all night~
What would it make weird? Ooooh, yes, the hot one! I totally saw you!
