head lifts from the book he's got his nose reluctantly buried in almost instantly at the mention of food. thank god for that. he was about to lose his sanity if he had to read one more page of this godforsakened book. he shoves it away to make room and takes the dinner offered his direction, eyeing the plate's contents. it's not the worst dinner he's seen so he can't really complain, even if he'd kill for a nice juicy steak or burger right now. ❝ can't be any worse than sammy's cooking. ❞ he brushed off as a light joke, setting it on the table to tuck in and shove a mouthful of food into his mouth.

❝ y'know, i don' think there's anythin' in these books that's gonna help us. ❞ he remarked, speaking around the mouthful. though his words come from more of a place of boredom and impatience at how long this was taking and how little he'd uncovered so far. books were never his forte. ❝ y'sure we can't jus'... ask someone? someone's bound to have come across these things at some point. ❞

there   was   no   use   in   even   trying   to   sleep   —   her   gut   felt   like   it   was   full   of   battery   acid   and   her   head   felt   like   it   was   pooling   with   blood,   throbbing   and   pinching   her   nerves.   her   body   didn’t   even   feel   like   her   own   —   violated   in   a   way   she   couldn’t   even   put   into   words   —   a   way   she   couldn't   rationalize.   how   could   james   do   this?   wasn’t   he   supposed   to   protect   her?   weren’t   they   a   team?   why   did   he   let   her   eat   —   people?   even   at   the   thought   of   it   she   felt   bile   creep   up   her   esophagus,   threatening   to   expel   itself   from   her.   it   was   a   simple   accident   that   lead   her   to   find   out   the   truth   —   overhearing   a   guilt-filled   conversation   with   two   other   men.   it   was   never   venison.            how   could   she   be   so   fucking   stupid?       

‘   can’t   sleep.   ’         she   finally   says.   her   neck   craned   up   from   her   slouched   position   on   the   edge   of   the   couch.   her   eyes   were   dark,   tired,   betrayed.   her   lips   were   turned   in   a   perfect   pout   of   disapproval.   her   voice   lowered   as   she   met   his   gaze   —   it   was   something   serious,   cold,   and   unfamiliar   to   even   herself.   

‘   did   you   know,   james?   ’         she   asked,   her   voice   unwavering.            ‘   did   you   know   we   were   eating   FUCKING   PEOPLE?   ’
