One of the bizarre things about leaving an abusive situation is suddenly realizing you feel confident and safe enough to say certain things to people. Like the other day I said to someone, “Hey, any clue when you can get me that kitten? Not trying to rush you, just wondering if there’s an update.” Like? I looked another human being in the eye and said, “not trying to rush you,” like that wouldn’t immediately induce unholy rage and have her screaming about how if I wasn’t trying to rush her I wouldn’t have mentioned it? I actually didn’t expect that reaction? And perhaps most shockingly of all, she didn’t do that???? It’s amazing and a little terrifying.
