I'm rereading the Overhill series right now and MAN I forgot just how much I love Asti. He's such a character. He tried to be intimidating but just ends up being really dramatic in return. He's petty. He's both overly confident in himself and super insecure. I fucking love this guy.

I'm actually going with the Overhills here. There isn't a very interesting Fauna within the Overhill-Series, but there is a list of Cryptids that Penny soley invented to make money off of them. So I sifted through my old PC to find them and Ta-Dahh! Here are the absolutely genuine cryptids Penelope Stanz has claimed to have seen! None of them are totally made up by her to gain more profit!

The no-eyed girl - a siren that lives deep within the forests of Oregon and can take on the shape of anything her target most desires. If this isn't a person, then she will probably turn into a big pile of food to lure you in

The Cash-Cloud - a cloudlike-being that Penny blames for stealing the money of the villagers of the small town she lives in. Certianly not an invention she soley came up with to hide the fact that she's actually the one stealing all of the money.

The common poltergeist - a relatively normal type of ghosts, usually hiding out in computers. They can be exorcised very easily

The suspicios cucumber - a cucumber that Penny once found swimming in the lake in the middle of her hometown. It has since then become a mysterious cryptid in the town - because who in their right mind would just drop a cucumber into a lake?

Happy STS! Stick a character (or several) in a different setting, genre, time period, whatever, etc. and tell me how they're dressing! For instance, send a modern character back to Ancient Rome or throw a futuristic character into a high fantasy. Anything to analyze how they'd dress without their current options. 🥰

Ouuh, this is such a fun concept!

As part of a writing exercise, I've sent the Overhills into medival/shakespearan times once upon a time... So let's do that again!

Darin and Laurena I can definetly see as knights. Both of them are strong enough to handle heavy armor and chainlink and stuff - so they'd have a traditional set of armor.

Ray on the other hand - I could see him dress like the old bard himself. Puffy sleeves, a frilled neck... Anything to blend in with the rest of the folk, really. Not seem too rich, not too poor. Not dirty. Just... Like everyone dressed back then.

Jake on the other hand would be dressed in rags all day. Something that CAN and SHOULD get dirty, so it isn't too much of a big deal once it is.

Lastly - Kayley would absolutely try to dress like a princess/like an actor as much as she could. The really fancy stuff. She'd probably steal it and ask Jake to sew it to fit her size.

Happy STS! Ah, spring. How are your characters faring? Who's dressing for the warm weather and loving it? Who has allergies? Who refuses to take off their jacket no matter how hot they get? Who picks flowers they probably shouldn't?

Spring is a fun time! Excpet for me, the writer - because all of the flora has declared war on me and I have to battle my allergies.

The Overhills probably don't enjoy themselves that much either - Michigan's climate (to my European knowledge, at least) isn't that pleasant until the late months of spring. So still a lot of rain for them!

Same goes for Paradiso. The show is locally based for me. And I live in the north of Germany, which is notorious for bead weather. Especially all throughout spring. But I did wanna write a beach-episode for them! ...One that takes place in pouring rain because the weather forecast screwed up again.

Hiro & Co are gonna be having a blast, though! They're all city-kids, so no picking flowers for them, sadly, but I can see Hiro being a lot more active with the sunlight finally out again. And Daiko is probably extatic about getting to wear nice clothes again.

In that case, here is a complete rundown of Rays/Pennys side of the family! I’ve recently compiled a bit of lore about the Stanz family tree, starting 1913 and I have something to say about each member - especially since I’ve been reworking the general Overhill-Setting a bit.

I've compiled this all so... This took quiet a while.

Here we go!

1913 - 1955 - Emmett Stanz (Born as Timothy J. Fletcher)

Yes, Em is the first entry on the list because... Everyone before him wasn't a Stanz, really. The name was choosen by himself - in his prime, Em was a wanted con-artist all across the US, became a better person and redeemed himself after meeting a mentor and ultimately started working at the FBI. The story of how I came up with his lore is very fun, actually! He's a Call of Cthulhu PC of mine where I didn't vibe with how my GM handeled him, so I turned hin into an NPC in one of my own settings... And also put him into the Overhill-lore. I figured with his criminal background he would make a very good relative for Penny. And even though my players managed to save him and get him out of everything in their play-through, he 'canonically' dies at the age of 42 during a shootout in the campaing.

1950 - ??? - Penelope Stanz

No, not OUR Penelope Stanz. But we'll get back to that. This Penny is Em's daughter. We don't know terribly much about her, other than the fact that she took what her dad never (really?) managed to accomplish and became an airline pilot within the 1970s or so. Also: Yes! Penny's dad decided to name his daughter after his grandmother - but again, we'll get back to that.

??? - ??? - Barbera Stanz

The family mamber we currently know the least about. Everything I scribeled down for her is that she's Penny's favorite grandma who would always tell her stories about her cool mom.

??? - ??? - Marvin Stanz (Somewhere in his early 20's in Outside, which takes place in 2025)

Now we're getting somewhere - This nice gentleman is Penny's dad... Who I put into Outside as a small side character because really, why the hell not? Marvin is as extraverted and talkative as everyone before in his bloodline and has a full head of curly hair which unfortunately is only shared by his youngest daughter. Him and Penny have a particularly close bond, since Penny is the one child that takes after him the most.

Regina, Katelyn and Penelope Stanz (65, 64 and 59 respectively at the start of the first Overhill-Novel)

Now we're REALLY getting somewhere! Penny is the youngest of three sisters and the only one who is really interested in her family's heritage, if only later in life. After a failed career in acting, she unknowingly picked up a job that seems to run in the family... And became a con-woman. Kate and Regina took up a much more secure career. We don't know a lot about what Kate did for a living before she retired, other than the fact that she is Ray's mother. Regina - the oldest - had an entirely different path in life: After serving in the Navy for a couple of years until giving up the military due to age, she now works as the captian... of a cruise ship!

Raymond A. Stanz (40 at the start of the first Overhill-Novel)

Here we are in the present - Ray was born with no siblings and aside from a few physical traits no seeming connection to his roots. He's relatively unaware of what is past relatives did - and I doubt that he'd ever be interested in researching it. Ray is a pragmatic man that spends his time worrying about the present and the future rather than being stuck in the past. All of the heat, extroversion and criminal energy from the generations before him have died down... Or have they?

Darin, Jake and Kayleen Overhill (16, 13 and 10 respectively at the start of the first Overhill-Novel)

Last but not least - Ray's and Laurena's children! Ray got married and changed is last name, thinking it would bring him bad luck since both of his aunts had some pretty grim work-accidents, but nonetheless, they're still part of the family. And everything that seems to have been lost with Ray is now back and better before. I can't really see any of the kids picking up a career as an engineer of some sort... So they probably have to stick to crime for now. Nahh, just kidding - but even though the kids aren't really aware about one of their ancestors punching Cthulhu and stealing the statue of liberty (twice), there's a lot of adventures waiting for them and a lot of chaos for them to get involved in.

Happy STS. Okay, hear me out. Your story becomes a musical. *grandly presents you with the opportunity to turn this into literally whatever you want* (Who knows all the choreography? Who is pissed? Who somehow escapes singing?) (What scene has the best song? What your story's musical sound like? Does it being a musical make any sense at all?)

Oh my god, I LOVE musical theater! Thanks for the ask!

Doing this for the Overhill-Series, I think it has the most potential to be a musical. Not one of the novels - just like a general story. Especially doing Penny‘s Backstory as a musical could be cool.

First of all - Joe Iconis should write it. I‘m a huge fan of all of his works. Love in Hate Nation, Be More Chill, Things To Ruin… All of the standalone stuff is great, too! Especially, for Paradise City, one of the storylines was actually inspired by an Iconis-Song!

I also think that if I was able to be the director myself, I would pay a ton of attention to the stage design. Personally, I think that musical is a very visual art for - choreography, costumes… And the stage too. Back To The Future had these amazing LED strips all over the theater that flashed whenever something big happened (time-travel, the lightning, doc first appearing, ect.). As I said before, I would do an Overhill-Musical - so if we lean into the sci-fi-side of things, there could also be LEDs.
