a/n: something for genji. not sure how or what to tag this as, but i personally felt a lot better after writing it.
“Never trust a man whose smile steals the breath right from your lungs.”
Is something that Genji told you when the two of you first met all those years ago in Hanamura, back before he and Hanzo had their battle. The time before he became a walking weapon, doing what was needed of him and killing without a second thought. The Genji of the here and now whispers those same words, his body not what it used to be, but something more. Something stronger and more durable than when he was a human, then when he was in Blackwatch and to what he is now in the recalled Overwatch.
Now his words hold some vulnerability, showing you a chink in his armor both physically and emotionally. From his expression to the look in his eyes and how his lips seemed to pull into a thin line before turning into something that just radiated pain, almost as if he’s asking for something he shouldn’t dare to ask of you.
“I wish that I had listened to my own words, but I trust you with every single breath your smile steals from my lungs. I give it to you without a fight, because when I’m with you... it feels as if I’m breathing once again for the first time when I saw your smile all those years ago.” soft and fragile, is the tone of voice that reaches your ears, pulling away from you putting that distance between the two of you again. The warmth of his hands holding your own would vanish, and you’d be left with only the memory of it.
Reaching out to grab his wrist, you pull him back to you. The space between the two of you closed once more while you cup his face in your hands, rubbing his cheeks with your thumbs.
“You’re smile is still as sappy as it was then Genji. I’ve been in love with you long before you even approached me you dork... God’s do you know how hard it was not to kiss you when you smiled for me?”
“Then do it. Kiss me.” Genji laughs, that smile you love so much changing his expression, the sadness vanishing while you gladly lean forward and kiss him.
“Never trust a man whose smile steals the breath right from your lungs.”
Genji’s advice was useless because you were already in love with his smile before the two of you met face to face in the arcade all those years ago. In a time where the weight of the plastic guns warmed by your hands and sweats gave way to the horror of using the real thing. Things are different now, you can kiss him without fear or hesitation because this time you would keep him safe.
