This is a question that’s been floated around in a lot of Nom’s Lore Conversations, and I’m curious to know what y’all think.

Very surpised ive yet to see anyine talk about the flaggellation references in bannerfall owens character please refrain from reading if this unnerves or discomforts you.

I find it very interesting that he has called the chat droplets or cat o' nine tails. For anyone unaware the cat o nine tails is a type of whip with 9 tails so to speak. The ends are usually dipped in tar to cause further agony to the victim. Flagellation was a common practive in the medieval ages as a way to both cure and prevent plaugue or other disease. The main idea was that if you punished yourself god wouldnt punish you. This coupled with his earlier mention of harming himself or the enemy whichever he can get his hands on first reinforces this statement. My theory is that he may of already lost something before and is going to great lengths to prevent it happening again. As well as his oath to do so himself if nobody else were to.

The use of a lion specifically may also have meaning. This section is from a cambridge article so i cannott guarantee all i say is truthfull to the greatest extent especially dur to the lack of surviving records. The article states medieval lions had 5 main catagories of symbolism i will touch on in a moment. The lion also represented courage and tradition so i highly doubt owens character will switch sides or if he does he shall fo so while simultaneousley shed the armour. However the medieval meaning of the lion varies with many passing fads.

The symbolic categories consist of the threatening lion the christain lion the noble lion the clement lion and the sinful lion.

All lions have their own links and lies which i do not have the time or energy to explain in full and thus would highly recommend the article.

The lions all seem to show pride which it appears owen does not have to such an extent if we follow the flaggelation theory. The fact the lion is restrictive armour may be a more literal metaphor on that he is sworn to this and is trapped by his oath

Overall this is a stretch and i am yet to finish the firsg episode so if i am wrong please disregard all i have said. I am not one for rants so do not expect this from me ever again.
