They walked from the woods onto main street, but the paladin’s scolding did not waver. “You coward!” Michael shouted, “how could you not sing the praises of Will the Wise every day?”
Mike grabbed the neck of his borrowed hoodie with such anger that Michael stumbled backward. He had no time to find his balance as Mike spun him around, thrusting him into the alley and slamming him against the wall so hard his head bounced off the brick, ears ringing.
“I told you,” Mike hissed, “it’s not allowed.” Mike’s voice turned to stone as he pushed Michael even further into the unforgiving building, his adrenaline turned feral, “If you keep this up you are going to get Will beaten. You’re going to get him killed.” His eyes burned with the memory of the quarry. The memory of Troy’s words.
“You would not fight for him?!” Michael growled.
The laugh that burst from Mike felt like fire in Michael’s eyes, Mike flailed his free hand wildly to take in the passers by beyond the alley entrance as his voice deepened to take in all his rage, his rage at this fucked up world, this soul sucking loneliness, this insufferable prick, “How many of them do you think I can take?”
Michael saw the storm in Mike’s eyes. He would fight as many as came, but how many could he defeat before they claimed their sorcerer. “You can go on and on about Will all you want, but don’t do it where they can hear.”
Michael wilted under the certainty on Mike’s face, the knowing that he would do whatever it took to still Michael’s tongue, and he knew instantly what his own face looked like. He’d seen it a hundred times. A thousand. Every time Michael stood between Will the Wise and any who would harm him. His stomach clenched, drawing him down, cowing him for the first time in his life.
Michael hadn’t even considered a world, an entire world, where being with Will was forbidden. The weight of it settled into his bones as the weight of Mike released him.
Michael’s head fell to his chest, his eyes shocked by the sorrow of it, “I’m sorry,” he said. Mike stared at him. “I’m so sorry.” Michael looked up, into his own fierce eyes, “You are braver than I.”
“I’m not brave,” Mike spat as he turned toward the street.
“I could never live without Will. I don’t believe I could ever do that, even for him.”
Mike froze. When he turned back to his doppelganger, Mike’s eyes were swollen with unshed tears. He swallowed, nearly choking, “You’d do what you had to.” After a moment, Michael nodded. Of course he would.
Michael recognized him now. They recognized each other. “We are alike after all,” Michael said.
Mike took a breath, then gave a sharp nod. “Let’s just get to El. We need to get you home.”
