And since we don't face direct punishment for missing positive social cues like we do for negative ones, our coping skills and compensatory hypervigilance don't develop the same way. So we go through a world of never recognising positive signals, sometimes spotting negative signals, and knowing for sure there's more negative signals we're still missing, because those keep blowing up in our face.

It bothers me so much that the healthcare system relies so much on the patient's ability to advocate for themselves, organize their history, and be so persistent against every medical “professional” who says there’s nothing wrong/they can do. But so many struggle with fatigue, brain fog, and face such ingrained systemic barriers, that the people who need and deserve help and support can’t access it.

I saw something recently that resonated with me: “Access shouldn't depend on who has the energy to fight for it.” And I’ve never agreed with anything more.

So, the cupboard is integral to the wall between the living room and Will's room. Cupboards like that are pretty common in old houses (here in the UK at least), especially houses that have grown throughout their history, like the Byers' house looks like it has (to me anyway).

My theory is that it was one of Will's main hiding places when Lonnie was around. When Lonnie left, Joyce and Jonathan covered it with that cabinet as a show it wasn't needed anymore.

When Will found himself in the UD, it was one of the first places he hid.

The drawings on the wall are part of the ramshackle nature of the Byers' house, Joyce has two boys after all.

A darker alternative is that it was a cupboard Lonnie would shut Will in, and that was why it was covered.

I always thought of it as will hiding. Being shut in there is darker indeed. But the wall is not thick enough for the cupboard and it doesn't bump out into Will's room. In fact his bed is up against where it would be. It would have to be Will's first experience with an interdimensional space, which opens many possibilities, including why the mind flayer picked him
