When it comes to Sonic characters (at least those considered official), I've come to notice a pattern when it comes to how they're named. Most characters tend to follow the trend set by the titular character, being a simple noun describing some aspect of the character. Sonic The Hedgehog himself being the trend setter, of course.
Others, however, look at first to be structured like a normal human name. Think Miles "Tails" Prower and Amy Rose. Here's the funny thing though; as (hopefully) everyone knows, "Miles Prower" is a pun on the term "Miles per hour." As someone on this very website has pointed out, if we apply this logic to Amy Rose, her full name becomes the word "amorous" (somewhat fitting, given her personality). This of course does not apply to human characters like the Robotnik family, as none of their names are very punny.
Then you have characters like Tikal and Pachacamac, whom are both named after ancient Meso-American cities. Needless to say, very straightforward.
This, of course, doesn't account for outliers like the Deadly Six, or non-mainline universes like the Archie or Fleetway comics, but I do find it funny how long this has been a thing, and nobody has really talked about it to my knowledge. Also I'd like to see more characters with clever puns for names. Like Argy Ria (The Silverfish) or Sly D. Thistle, if I may be to bold.
In conclusion, names in the Sonic universe tend to come in at least three flavors:
A: "Word" The "Animal" (Sonic The Hedgehog, Knuckles The Echidna, Tangle The Lemur, etc.)
B: A Pun (Miles Prower, Amy Rose, Bunnie Rabbot*)
C: Ancient city-states (Tikal, Pachacamac)
