The Apollo 11 Saturn V space vehicle climbs toward orbit after liftoff from Pad 39A at 9:32 a.m. EDT. In 2 ½ minutes of powered flight, the S-IC booster lifts the vehicle to an altitude of about 39 miles some 55 miles downrange. This photo was taken with a 70mm telescopic camera mounted in an Air Force EC-135N plane. Onboard are astronauts Neil A. Armstrong, Michael Collins and Edwin E. J. Aldrin.

In the history of mankind, only twelve men have ever set foot on the moon. Pad 39, shown above, was the site of the takeoff for these missions. This launch pad is currently shut down, but if someone (very rich, of course) wanted to fund a rocket launch from here, NASA would allow it. Most people haven't been able to see this. I got a different type of tour that took us here. I feel so lucky to have seen this.
Late 1976 shot of Pad 39 being fitted with a Fixed Service Structure for the upcoming Space Shuttle programme. Here we see an Apollo Saturn Launch Umbilical Tower providing fit check support and, possibly, lifting support. This shot also clearly shows how the upper portion of the Saturn LUT was used as the FSS for the shuttle, something that is just a tad harder to distinguish once all the swing, umbilical, and support arms are added, not to mention the RSS.
