The Dinorwic Quarries Railway, more commonly known as the Padarn Railway in North Wales was unique in many ways. Running from the quarry at Dinorwic to the harbour, it was laid to a curious 4ft gauge. 2ft gauge slate waggons from the quarry would be placed directly onto the 4ft 'mainline' wagons, and conveyed down the line. The railway opened with two engines, bought from Alfred, Horlock & Co., in 1848. These were names Fire Queen & Jenny Lind, the former surviving today. Later engines to replace these were conventional 0-6-0Ts from Hunslet, these being tragically scrapped at the closure of the line.
