Maul doesn’t know if this mission is an insult or an opportunity.

It should be an insult, the murder of a Junior Senator in an unguarded apartment is child’s play to a creature like him. An untrained idiot could do the job. But, the fact that it is him - that his master has insisted that he do it and do it quickly and cleanly at that… well, that changes things.

It seems to Maul that his master is scared.

Sidious hides it well of course, he keeps what’s left of his feelings buried deep beneath the black crust of composure that holds his form, but Maul has been his apprentice too long. He sees too much and they both know it, sooner or later it will be impossible to ignore - he will have to kill or be killed.

But first…

Sighing to himself, Maul ducks from the alcove he’s been hiding in since sundown, letting the force guide him as his hand and feet find holds in the towering structure no one else would dare look for.

She lives in the clouds, far above the grimy underworld he spends his days in, a place with moonlight and stars and air that doesn’t taste like engine fuel and rot. Isolated by its height but otherwise unprotected, it’s a matter of moments to climb her veranda and step into her world.

The ceilings tower above him, marble lining every surface in moon dappled greys, a wide, empty space that opens easily into her bedroom. There’s not even a droid to stop him.

Senator Amidala lies at rest in her wide, cushioned bed. Her breath soft and even in the hush of the room as he passes between the shadows to her side.

She’s young still, fresh faced and far more relaxed then she looks on the holonews channels. There she burns, a righteous fire in every word she speaks. She talks of freedom, of self-determination and personhood, and the more she speaks the more people listen. The more he listens. A following builds behind her until she’s more than just an inconvenience to his master, she’s a genuine threat to his great plans.

She is fresh water in a stagnant pond, stirring up the silt… and the monsters who hide within it.

It’s strange the way the fates have played out, it’s not the first time she has crossed his path after all. Almost a decade ago her face had peered seriously up at him from a holopad, the child-queen of a useful planet his master had plans for. It hadn’t come to anything then, but now…

She sighs, the noise sending him deeper into the shadows as she shifts in the bed, her hair blotting out the pillows in a mass of dark curls. The sleeve of her nightgown, some impractically lacy confection, slips from her shoulder and he finds his jaw clenching.

Past missions and fate and fire aside… it is clear she is not a child any more.

This is a woman grown. Beautiful, vulnerable, and yet the only creature alive he knows to be capable of lacing fear into his Master’s eyes.

There’s an unexpected tightness in his throat as he unhooks his blade, a hesitation as he weighs it in his hand.

What would it be like, he wonders as he looks down at the sleeping woman, to be the master and not the apprentice? To decide his own missions and claim his own victories? To slay who he wants and spare who he doesn’t - just because he can?

How long has he yearned to live freely where the moonlight can reach? To breathe sweet, fresh air in fine quarters and do exactly as he pleases when he pleases. No longer just a shadow, a weapon to be used and discarded by an uncaring hand.

What would it be like to be feared as she is by the darkest powers in the universe? To be respected?

The blade slips quietly back into its sheathe, he will not insult this woman by killing her in her sleep. He knows now she deserves better than that.

His Master however…

Perhaps he has been an apprentice long enough after all.
