Naturalised under these rose bushes is the bulbous perennial Puschkinia scilloides var. libanotica (striped squill). This bulb originates in the eastern Mediterranean and it thrives in moist conditions during spring while growing, but needs warm, dry conditions in summer.

In my friends garden I noticed the delicate sprays of pale lilac-blue flowers of Aster 'Chilly Fingers', a cultivar with long thin petals. In the autumn these herbaceous perennials extend the display in a border.

Providing an early autumn display of flowers on this barn was the deciduous sub-shrub Clematis ‘Praecox’. This plant produces long scrambling stems and can be grown in a border where it can be supported by other plants, used as a groundcover or, as here, trained annually as a low-growing wall shrub.
