An ideal upright, evergreen sub-shrub to add structure to a dry garden is Phlomis 'Edward Bowles' (Jerusalem sage, Turkish sage). This is a hybrid between Phlomis fruticosa and Phlomis russeliana and grows in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun with a sheltered position.

This is the species most commonly hung as a Christmas decoration in North America. The classic European mistletoe is Viscum album. Mistletoes are obligate hemiparasitic plants, meaning they cannot develop without a host, and if the host dies, so does the mistletoe. It draws water and minerals from the host plant but can photosynthesize its own organic nutrients. In spite of the common name, oak isn’t the only plant it grows on. The white berries are toxic to humans but birds love them.

Twinflower, Linnaea borealis, is known as a subshrub (aka dwarf shrub). This beautiful summer-blooming plant with delicate pink trumpet-shaped blooms lives close to the ground of dark forests. When it is not actively blooming, it is easy to overlook this perennial plant.

#oneadayplant Astelia chathamica ‘Silver Spear’ (the Chatham Islands kakaha). A classy little number (not actually very little once established). Everyone thinks that Astelia must be arid loving plants based on their look, but they need a surprising amount of water to do well. The best advice is that the roots shouldn’t sit in water, though weirdly, they often do in New Zealand and some plants grow as Epiphytes (up and on large trees and shrubs), so who knows what they really like. My experience of Astelia is that they can be challenging to get established, but once settled, they grow easily and well.
