The Sacrum bone of Tequixquiac, discovered in Mexico, is an ancient paleo-Indian sculpture of a canine, carved in a pleistocene-era bone of a prehistoric camel. The carving, dated around 14,000 to 7,000 BCE, is considered among the earliest pieces of art from the American continent.

Clovis point, fashioned from chert and belonging to the Clovis culture (so named from early 20th century archaeological finds near Clovis, New Mexico) that spread throughout North America following the Last Glacial Period. Clovis points are distinguished by manufacture through the pressure flaking technique and by fluting near the base. Manufactured between 11,500 and 9,000 BCE and found in Sevier County, Utah; now in the Natural History Museum of Utah, Salt Lake City.

Thirteen thousand years ago on the wintry plains of Pleistocene North America, this Paleo-Native American hunting party is going up against a lone bull woolly mammoth!

Given that prehistoric humans attacking mammoths or other elephants is one of the most enduring tropes of paleoart, it would be remiss of me not to do my own spin on it.

This Clovis era projectile point is one of the oldest human-made items in our collection. The Clovis period occurred roughly 13,300 to 12,800 calendar years ago. It was made by chipping at black, fluted flint-stone.  Flint is a type of sedimentary rock.

Emphasis

"The Master/Mistress of the Game Animals,” made by either Paleo-Indians or Native Americans, this set of petroglyphs located within Renegade Canyon of the Californian Coso Range. Some glyphs possibly date back to ~10,000ya, but for these it is not known for sure. There is emphasis on the largest figure in the middle, who appears to be holding an atlatl spear thrower and keeping the other figures from a hunt animal. The slightly larger form of the master/mistress creates both contrast against the other meticulously carved figures and a focal point on the warden. The placement of the game master/mistress also lends to this focal contrast. Those three smaller figures appear to respect the larger one in a way that we have yet to truly grasp. But many of the petroglyphs of the Coso Range seem to depict hunting stories, rituals, practices, and “magic.”

Emphasis Glossary Below the Hash:

EMPHASIS - Pow! Something in a scene dominates. In other words, the designer gives visual priority to part of a scene in order to draw the eye there first.

CONTRAST - in size, color, texture can make one thing stand out from the many things around it.

FOCAL POINT - The focal point demands attention, it is accentuated, contrasted -- the star or the most prominent component of a scene.

ISOLATION - Feature a single element alone, away from other elements to create emphasis.

ONE ELEMENT - Eliminate everything else in the composition and the thing that’s left will grab the attention such as a bold title or symbol.

PLACEMENT - Position your most important design component in a place to grab attention, such as the center of a poster.

SUBORDINATION - The focal point has the visual power while other elements of the scene are subordinate.

WHOLE OVER PARTS - Sometimes we don’t want the eye to go somewhere specifically such as in an establishing shot at the beginning of a story. We want to show an overview of the environment before we jump into the story. We might look at a map with lots of details. The whole map is the important thing. When we select a place on the map to visit, then that spot becomes the focal point and the Emphasis shifts from the whole to the specific. Another example is that the whole game is more important than its levels.
