I bolted from the porch, ran around the house, across the snow-laden lawn, through the backyard, and the white trees, over a fence, through two more yards untouched by footprints, until I reached Bluff Drive, and with the bay sparkling below like ancient days, I stood there alone - alone and whole - and I waved wildly when I saw her car pass through the trees.
