This would usually be a main blog post, but with what was happening i wanted a bit of positivity.

I am not a lesbian, nor am i super well versed in queer history, but i know that “bi/pan lesbians” is a term that has existed longer than twitter, and if some people took 2 seconds to look it up, they’d find that it has a very important place in queer history.

I got this explained to me by somebody who knows what they’re talking about (ty!) but if you don’t, i’ve found this article that i think covers a good section of the controversy. Although, if you’re up for it, i reccomend doing your own research.

Bi Lesbians Exist. Pan Lesbians Exist. Ace Lesbians Exist. To some these terms may seem contradictory, but remember there are different forms of attraction. Attraction can be sexual or romantic (as well as emotional, spiritual, aesthetic, etc.). A Person may be sexually attracted to only/primarily Women, but is romantically attracted to people regardless of gender. A Person may be sexually attracted to people regardless of gender, but is romantically attracted to only/primarily Women. A Person may not experience sexual attraction, but is romantically attracted to only/primarily Women. Hence, why terms like "Pan Lesbian" and "Ace Lesbian" exist, these terms acknowledge the different forms of attraction one may have. It is also important to note that prior to the 2000s, terms like "Lesbian" did not have such strict criteria/definition.

so basically, an m-spec lesbian is someone who 1) uses the split attraction model and therefore may be a lesbian in one orientation, but m-spec in another orientation (for example, one could be a lesbian in their romantic orientation but pansexual in their sexual orientation), 2) a multigender person whose different genders have different sexualities associated with them, like for example, a multigender person who is both a man and a woman, and feels like as a woman their romantic attraction to women is lesbian, and as a man their romantic attraction to two or more genders is biromantic, 3) an abrosexual/abromantic person who is sometimes a lesbian and sometimes an m-spec orientation, 4) someone who feels more connected to the older definition of lesbian (that lesbianism is a woman/non-binary person attracted to other women, not inherently exclusively, just simply attracted to other women)

for many people with multiple genders, gender and sexuality are (pun intended) not a straight line! one could feel more attached to a certain orientation when it comes to one of their genders, and more attached to another one of their orientations when it comes to a different gender of theirs, and that's one of the reasons someone may identify as an m-spec lesbian!

also, the common definition nowadays of lesbianism is inherently m-spec inclusive, as "non-men attracted to non-men", while not really being a great definition to apply to the community as a whole, includes attraction to "non-men", which is so much more than just one gender! so, many lesbians who use that definition may also be m-spec and use m-spec lesbian to show that they're m-spec but only attracted to non-men!

a lot of the sources for this are somewhat limited, as these identities as they are today really kind of evolved as things like variorientation, fluid sexuality, and complex multigender identities started being more explored, but the origin of m-spec lesbian terms is documented from the mid-late 20th century, when lesbian still more generally referred to "a woman-oriented woman", meaning a woman who was attracted to other women (this of course before non-binary people began to gain more recognition and acceptance within the community), and the concept of "exclusive attraction" wasn't really a thing, it was either "a woman currently in a relationship with another woman is a lesbian", ignoring that they sometimes dated men as well, or "a woman currently in a relationship with a man is heterosexual", ignoring that they sometimes dated women as well. many m-spec women/non-binary people who dated women would be labeled as lesbian and have a lesbian identity because they were attracted to women, as that was how the definition used to generally work, so bisexual women were both lesbians because they were wlw, and bisexual, and so many people labelled themselves as bi lesbians!

pls lmk if you have any more questions! i am by no means an expert, and m-spec lesbian labels don't apply to everyone who may technically fit them, it's all down to the labels that feel best to someone, i know for me i could label myself as an m-spec lesbian because romantically i'm one and i'm attracted to men sexually and queerplatonically as well as women and non-binary people, but i personally just prefer the term sapphic or lunian, so they're valid labels but everyone has different preferences :D
