Halloween, hiking, home cooking, & hard grad school.
November 5, 2017
It’s over! It’s over! I no longer have to present about the customs we have of Halloween in America. It was Monday and it was finally time to celebrate the holiday I’ve been teaching about for weeks. The day started out great with a play presented by the parents of our school about Halloween. I may have had a difficult time following their accents but it was quite entertaining. Although none of the students dressed up Monday or Tuesday, they were still in great spirits to eat candy once school was over.
They also made some great decorations within the school!
We had Wednesday off from school for All Saint’s Day in Spain which is a national celebrated holiday. That meant that is was time for me and my friends to be able to celebrate too! When I arrived home from work, I went to the home of the three girls whom I teach private lessons and did all of their Halloween makeup! It was so fun to be hanging out with them and speak English without talking about school lessons. My makeup on my pirate costume wasn’t too shabby either:
Unfortunately the rest of the work week was consumed by a stomach virus which was a slap in the face after such a great week. But alas, I did make it to the weekend.
I have truly been trying to focus my weekends on cooking more and applying to graduate school. This weekend I made my first coconut curry quinoa soup (trying to get back on the healthy track despite all the bread in Spain). I also started some personal statements for graduate school which has caused nothing but anxiety. Fingers crossed one of these schools wants me to study with them <xxxx>
I also went to Caravaca de La Cruz to go on a picturesque fall hike in Spain. Yes, I finally saw some different colored leaves!! It was so nice to be chilly for one of the first times since I’ve been back in Spain. With two of my auxiliare friends and an eclectic group of Spaniards, we walked around Parque Fuente del Marques. Fall foliage, tiny caves, and two adorable older Spanish women talking our ears off made for a great afternoon.
After the hike, we continued my friend’s birthday celebration by trying our first paparajote! A traditional dessert only known in the Murcia region, it is a battered and fried lemon leaf with sugar, and damn was it tasty. I do not think this will be my last one by any means, but be careful not to eat the leaf! It is only there for the lemon essence within this scrumptiousness.
Currently enjoying a Fall breeze coming onto the terrace, a cup of green tea, and good intentions for a happy and healthy week ahead. I guess I get to look forward to teaching about Thanksgiving now.
