The magical entry to Cambo Garden, Scotland, reveals a small copse of Acer griseum (paperbark maple). This is a small spreading deciduous tree with the major feature being the peeling, papery bark which looks great when backlit. The leaves have good autumn colour in reds and oranges.

acer griseum
1 of 3 germinating Acer griseum seedlings. I’m still hoping for more with the masses of seeds I had sown two winters ago, but paperbark maple has a big reputation of having an *absurdly* low germination success rate (part of which being because most seeds are embryoless duds). For 1% germination rate? I’ll take 3 seedlings as a win.
A young Paperbark Maple and some Filipendula blossoms in the walled gardeon on the Fenway side of the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Both are delicate, and the garden was very restful. ISGM is, for a museum, amazingly replete with plants!

A small spreading deciduous tree Acer griseum (paperbark maple) has cinnamon-coloured bark that peels each year and looks wonderful backlit by winter sunshine. This tree is fairly slow-growing and performs best in moist, well-drained soils.
