The fragrant, pure white flowers of Magnolia denudata (yulan, lily tree, slender magnolia) were just opening before the foliage emerges. This plant makes a large deciduous, spreading shrub or small tree up to 9m in height.

Our Hazelnut Shrub is nutting! Wow, had no idea the satchels looked so cute.

About year 5 in the yard from just a stick and only about 5′ tall. Deer love eating the shrub so it must be protected. Many of the leaves are chewed, so insects like it too! Fun small backyard native tree for observing and eating! 

Looks like a few more weeks before the nuts are mature. Hope I can get a few before the critters discover it!

Okay, I need help with a plant identification. It’s either a shrub or small tree. Who can tell me what this is? @kihaku-gato ?

Cercis siliquastrum

The deep pink flowers are produced on year-old or older growth, including the trunk, in spring. Also, the flowers display a blossom with five free petals and fused sepals. This flower shape is typical of the pea family (Fabaceae). The leaves appear shortly after the first flowers emerge. These are cordate with a blunt apex, which occasionally has a shallow notch at the tip. The tree produces long flat pods that hang vertically. The flowers are edible and purportedly have a sweet-acid taste.
